What color eggs do they lay and how are they to raise (the chickens, not the bulls)? I saw some at the chicken show and they looked like big fat chickens that would make a good meat/egg bird. Anybody raise them out there?
Brahmas
I've got some light brahma hens. They are good natured, lay brown eggs...take a little bit longer to mature to laying but I like them.

I've got Brahma cross bantams--they lay tannish brown eggs and are extremely calm and good natured. They do great in cold climates because their legs are feathered, keeping their toes warmer when they perch. I believe they come from India originally (anyone know?), so I suspect heat is no problem, and mine certainly do fine in the heat and humidity here.
I have a Buff Brahma who should be laying any week now. She's a big bulky bird with an awkward gait. She was VERY slow to feather, but is the absolute sweetest hen in the yard! She walks right up to you and acts like a dog. Very nice birds.
Awesome birds! ;) I have two buff hens, and two buff roosters. I have 6 light pullets that haven't started laying yet. I agree that they are a bit slower to mature, but have a wonderful, calm demeanor, and are wonderful even around my two oldest boys-6 and 4 1/2. They are also winter hardy, a good thing for me up here in the frigid midwest.
I have one buff brahma and I wish I had more. She's a great hen and lays lots of nice kind of pinkish brown eggs.
So that's where those lighter eggs are coming from....the first ones to start laying in my flock were the buff rocks. They were a nice medium brown. Then I get some of those lighter ones, and some darker ones with "speckles" I wasn't sure which ones were coming from who...buff brahmas and my one speckled sussex..guess her eggs look like her, lol!
I raised light brahmas one year and was delighted with them. They are a heavy bird, but behave like pets. I could even reach under them to get the eggs out of the nest without getting pecked. I am thinking about doing them again now that I am retired. Frank
I raised a lot of brocollii one year, and nobody would come and pick it. I fed it to the chickens all winter, and they thrived on it. It also made their yolks turn dark orange and tastier. Frank
I never thought to give broccoli to the chickens, I'm learning alot on here :) Thanks for the idea Frank!
