Thanks for the link. My seeds are on their way.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Yes thank you - lets get this out to everyone we know. If the bees are lost we are all in trouble together.

Thanks Barb.

FYI The much maligned wisteria grows happily over my deck. While in bloom it is covered with large bumblebees as well as the smaller honey bee. They are totally uninterested in any human activity as they go about their business.

Thanks for the link!

I am smiling as I read this thread! Today I was going to clean the front porch real good to make room for more plants (winter coming on). The first thing I did was reach up to take a creeping charlie down to throw out. She never was that pretty anyway and I need all these spots for hanging hoyas.

To make a painful experience short I got stung 3 times on the pointer finger (side and underneath of finger) and on top of my hand.

It is much more swollen tonight as I can't even close my fingers into a fist. I am not having much sympathy for the bees tonight (just teasing)........This is an important subject.

I took this pic when it first happened......too lazy to be more dramatic and show you what my hand looks like tonight...........the swelling has now moved across the entire top of my hand and fingers.

Gess, take bynadryl now. Don't fool around with this. Stings can be dangerous. Especially when they are multiple. Soak your hand in a bowl of ice water. Are you sure it was bees? Some stings are more toxic than others.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

WOW Gail, that is BAD! Are you sure you don't have an allergic reaction to the stings? I agree with Lou, at least a Benadryl.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh I am positive they were bees. I grabbed the can that shoots 25 feet away and got as many as i could that were enclosed on the porch and then shut the screen door. I saw those little 'devils' with my own two eyes. There were a lot of them flying around after i got stung.

I didn'' even think about Benadryl. Going to the medicine cabinet now. I am not allergic to bites of any kind but i do have one adult child who has to carry a shot around with him in case he gets stung.

This farm life is either going to get me down or get me going! (LOL) My brother was on an open tractor a couple of years ago (there aren't many open tractors any more) when he got stung by the killer bees and couldn't get away from them. He had more than 100 bites on him. Now that was serious and he was in the hospital for a while.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Glad to know you have some meds on hand! I have terrible allergies, so I always have something for my son that is allergic to any type of stings, but an allergy pill usually takes care of it.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I may get voted the dumbest person on DG. My medicine cabinet is so complete because I live in the country and the closest hospital is an hour away. But I totally forgot to go take some Benadryl. I have now taken it...........

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Blame it on the pain! :)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

sounds good to me,mistygardener! (LOL)

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL :)

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Gessie, I am so glad you're okay!

I live in fear of this kind of thing. I have never been stung, so I have no idea if I'm allergic or not. All I know is that I'm allergic to a lot of OTHER things. But I'm an organic gardener, so we do our best to encourage the bees and wasps. Thank heavens you didn't have a life-threatening reaction!

Patio, who's going off right now to check the medicine cabinet for Benadryl

I guess I never worry about anything having to do with health problems because there are so many doctors in the family I don't want to be the hypochondriac!

But, I just sent a picture of my hand to my daughter, a pediatrician, and told her it is much worse than the picture . I started to become alarmed when she yelled at her husband (gastrointestinal Dr..) to come look at my hand on the computer. I have since had it up high over my heart with ice on it and I need to sleep with it elevated. (Their concern is that it doesn't get infected?????)

I will know a lot more in the morning..............
Thanks for letting me 'whine' a little more (LOL)

Oh My Goodness....that is really swollen! I am allergic to bees, wasps, etc., and used to carry the shot as well. I was told to apply ice, and take two benedryl. If the swelling didn't go down, or extended toward my heart to go to ER.....been there more than once!

If the swelling has not gone down I'd be checking with ER!!!!!!!!!

Will say a prayer for you also!!!!!!!!!!

OMG! Thank God you have doc's in the family! Not worth risking your health over, for sure!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Up date (smiling) is that I have a Dr's appointment this afternoon. The swelling has not gone down so I am following my daughter's orders ............thanks for letting me whine a bit (LOL)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Sorry to hear that it is still swollen, keep us posted!!!!!!! Glad you are going to the doc.....Take care of yourself!!!!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

was it honey bees, gail? i hope it wasn't. i love them so for all of the work that they do. get well soon.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You all are so nice! I did go to the doctor yesterday and I am really glad. I didn't know that the bee stings (they weren't honey bees) could be so dangerous. I was having an allergic reaction to the stings. He gave me something my daughter said was a prescription strength Benadryl. He told me to always keep it in my purse with me and leave some in the house all the time should it ever happen again. I promptly started the 3 pills a day yesterday and my hand is getting better all the time!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

So glad to hear that you are OK! It can be very serious! Got to take my oldest granddaughter to the Dr. so we'll be out for awhile. Take care of yourself!!!!!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Glad to hear you are doing better, Gail! I was afraid when I looked at it that it might be an allergic reaction since that is what my son looks like when he gets stung. :( My dad used to have to carry the Epi pen with him all the time, but he seems to be much better now, thank goodness!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am doing great and thank you mistygardener!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

You are very welcome! :)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

glad you are on the mend.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Gess, so glad that you saw a doc. Would not want anything to slow you down.

LouC

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lou, you are being funny as nothing ever slows me down for long. I just whine and keep going like the energizer bunny!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

lol gessie!! Glad your alright now :-)

debnes

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

can I borrow some of your energy for a bit, gail?! :)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You certainly may, but you haven't seen me crash when I do ! (LOL) I crash big time and then sleep for a week getting ready to go again!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks! :) I slept til Noon today since feeling puny, but I feel better and need some of that energizer bunny help! :)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

mistygardener, I am still in my pajamas after a 2 hour nap! I drove 4 hours to Boerne and back yesterday. i was in the car for over 8 hours.

I hope you are feeling better. I have to tell you all that this morning I went outside on the front porch to fertilize all plants that needed it. I will be darn if I didn't take the gallon water can to get a hanging basket of hoyas and the bees went everywhere. It was worse than the other day, but I didn't hang around to see if they wanted to sting me.

I used up another can of 25 ft. spray peeking out the front door a few seconds at a time (LOL)
