Hi, All
Recently I bit the bullet and went in on a co-op to get some Forbid as I am batteling spider mites on the brugs I am overwintering. I got it last week Thursday I think and I immediately mixed some up and (ratio of 1/4 tsp per gallon) and sprayed my brugs. Yesterday I was SHOCKED to see some live mites still on a few brugs. So I dragged them all outside and resprayed all of them, let them dry and brought them back in. Well tonight, I looked at my Rosalie and did a double take...there right on the top I saw MITES running around like they hadn't a care in the world and beginning to spin some more webbing! ARGHHH!!! How can this BE???????????? How long does this stuff take to work?? I'm freakin out here! I also recently bought some Gnatrol to get rid of the fungus gnats in my seedlings (I had begun seeing some flying around)..well I have now watered them 3 times with the gnatrol and I STILL see fungas gnats every time I'm over there looking at the seedlings. What is going on HERE?? Am I growing some kind of SUPER-bugs that nothing will kill? FYI - I have never used FORBID before so it's not like they could have a resistance to it.
Any ideas??????????????
sign me,
Freaked out in CT
Anyone ever have FORBID - NOT work???
OH NO!!!! I'm so sorry to hear that. I thought Forbid was supposed to be a WONDER treatment. That's rather un-nerving.
I have Forbid and couldn't be happier with it! I used it 3 times this season and really haven't had much of a problem at all. I timed it so I would not exceed the 3 times per season thing.
As for fungus gnats.. good luck.. I've tried everything that I've read.. peroxide, dry surface, bottom water, sticky tape, mosquito dunks, BT, sand, dryer sheets, my cold cup of coffee with French Vanilla coffee mate works great for the flying ones! LOL Should I keep going? LOL
I feel your pain when it comes to fungus gnats..
I'm sorry I'm not much help here.. :(
I've been alternating Forbid with Avid for a couple of years now. It always worked great until this fall when I wanted to put everything in the greenhouse. Everything had gotten just covered with those pesky little red spider mites that you can see.
I sprayed with Forbid, which did absolutely nothing, so I sprayed with Avid, which also did absolutely nothing. Then in frustration, I drug out some old Kelthane and sprayed with it. It killed the little monsters.
I wonder if they got immune to both Avid and Forbid. Anyway, just to be safe I defoliated all the brugs before they went into the greenhouse. How's that for overkill?
Diane, since you had not used Forbid before, I'm wondering if you got an old batch or something whose shelf life was over. I know that does not help you, but that's all I can think of.
Kay

Diane, it is possible that neighbors have used Forbid and the mites have grown resistant to it. It might be time to go back to older sprays or use Neem Oil. It's late enough in the season that you wouldn't have to worry about burn due to hot weather.
I use avid and floramite w/ forbid..[ a phermone item that attracts the mites to the posion ]...alternating between the two..and seemed to always have some SM... This year I got a gift with white flies which I'd never had... so I started spraying with a mixture of seven...bug b gone...and an ortho systemic.. on a weekly basis for the WF they recomend a few times a year..hahaha.. Well...I haven't seen a mite since... I think the white flies eat them... I still have my white flies though.. going to put some granular bayer systemic rose and flower care...in the pots... I must say the mixture of Seven...BBG..and the systemic does get the WF moving ..they do abandon the things I've sprayed.. and move to somethng else...or perhaps a part of the plant I didn't reach.. and the yellow sticky traps take their share also..
I'm a muti coctail attacker and I keep beating them back.. maybe some day I'll have either rid myself of them.. or developed what you think you might have on yours...a super strain..
mmmmm I think it's time for some malathion to sweeten their salad...
OH Ialso like to leaveasticky trap under a light...during the night... as when the plant lights and the other house lighting go out.. the WF are quite attracted to any light source....
Good luck there... oh do I understand ... Gordon
I use orgznic fertilizers and spray with seaweed and molasses havent seen a mite in about 8 to 10 month before that my place was a mite haven just my 2 cents worth I have never tried forbid. I decided I would never spend that much on any pesticide or fertilizer I built a nice permanent 9 x10 greenhouse for the same price as a bottle of forbid. I dont want to seem like a whacko but I am trying to help It has really worked for me.
Yeah, I'd love that Ted.. but how often do you have to spray? When you have a LOT of brugs to spray.. it is never ending! No way can I spray every week.. You at least talked me into getting the seaweed! I treat my brugs with a lil candy every now and then.. just hard to spray so many.. The more "earthy" stuff I do for my brugs the healthier they are!
When I went to the hydroponics store and told them I wanted seaweed for controlling spider mites, they looked at me like I was a ghost! LOL Then they went on to explain to me that would not control mites.. I responded with.. well maby it will make my plants so healthy they can fight it off theirselves! They couldn't argue that!
Gordon, I use Bayer's Tree & Shrub the 12 month soil drench stuff and never ever get whiteflies or aphids.. To me, they are the easiest to get rid of.
I sure do worry hearing this about Forbid though... It sure made my year pleasant this year.. I sure hope it continues to work!
