Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Wanted to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving before all the mad cooking starts!

I won't be having Thanksgiving this year because most of the family are off in Arizona and my Mom and FIL have plans to go to Kalama Heights for their big lunch and the show they put on for the oldies...decided to work instead, that way I can relieve my co-worker so that he can spend time with his family. I am not too cut up about not having to cook, makes a nice change after so many years! Bough a turkey anyway, always handy to have it in the freezer, and you can't beat the price! Guess what we will be having for diner one night in February, Christi!

What is everyone else doing?

Warmest Aloha!

BHM, you are so sweet for working Turkey day!
Going to the store tonight to get stocked up. We're having a family gathering at my DS's house. Planted a Dwarf Poinciana in her back yard a couple months ago, and while we are there for Thanksgiving, we'll be adding a brick edging and some mixed bulbs and flowers to dress it up! Gardening and turkey, two of my favorite things...
Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

My friend and neighbor Barbara arrived the other day and we had a great visit last night. Catching up on several month's news and gossip. I have a turkey in the freezer and may break it out for us and the dogs. Her dog is recuperating from several leg surgeries, my five are all doing ok. So maybe our blended family will get together. (I have dogs and cats and lots of birds visit. I always say I don't discriminate on the basis of species.) A few planats may need to be sacrificed to complete the meal.

Enjoy everyone.

Going over the river and through the woods to great, great grandmother's house. DH will be doing most of the cooking here to carry with us and others will bring side dishes. His mother will soon be 90 and we don't require anything of her other than her presence. Hard for her to ride the 75 miles to our home so we go to her. I think we will be postponing until Friday in order for the grown kids to be with the other side of their families. Very thankful for health this year.
Blessings on all of you.

Anybody ever done a deep fried turkey? I have never done so, but I believe they're delicious. A friend started a fire the first year she tried it....
Last year I tried Alton Browns brining, best turkey we ever had - will always use this method from now on. In cold climates some folks can do the brining outside, we had to use a chest cooler lined with plastic and lots of ice to make sure we didn't kill anybody by getting it too warm. It was quite a struggle to turn that 22lb beast over in the brine! Great results though.

We have done the fried turkey thing. Mike even had a special gizmo for it. Have since given to our son. Very expensive as it takes about takes about 5 gallons of peanut oil. Then the oil is difficult to store afterwards and is only good for another fried turkey. If you are doing several back to back and sharing the cost it is worth it. Can be very dangerous as well. When the turkey is put into the oil, it will suddenly boil up and over if have the least bit too much oil. I have had it several times and don't think it is any better than one cooked in the oven.

my 1/2 penny.

My small family of 3 will join a large (extended) family of appr. 22 down the street from us, with everyone bringing some dishes. This is always a great fun event. I will be contributing pecan pie and Dutch apple tart.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Will be going to my grandma's for Thanksgiving this year. Not too much cooking for us. Just some pies, mashed potatoes and brownies. Everyone else is bringing all the other stuff.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Our "new" tradition since moving to the islands without family, is to join others like us up in Volcano (about 4000' and much cooler). Donna bakes the turkey with stuffing and a ham...the rest of the 'family' bring sides and desserts. It is always pleasant to catch up with others and make new friends. This time we are taking another couple much in the same situation! In exchange, we bring oranges and tangerines from our trees, bananas and heliconias to the folks up there who don't have the tropicals we do.

Hope everyone has a warm and loving holiday...

Happy Thanksgiving!!! When I lived on Oahu a friend included our turkey in his group imu and it was the best turkey I ever had. If you know someone who does turkey that way, I highly recommend it. Enjoy!! Aloha

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

imu?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I was wondering the same thing?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Ah...and Imu is an 'native' (very polynesian) oven...generally a hole in the ground where fires are built and food is actually steamed wrapped in taro, banana and other leaves. Here the food cooked that way is usually pig and is called Laulau...DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEvine!!!!! Very traditional.

We found this way of cooking with slight variations all over the Pacific....even in Southern Chile!!!

When I first saw imu I thought of the bird emu. lol. Had to go back and reread that.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

That is what I thought, too! LOL

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Hee hee, we call that a pig roast down here!
Sounds yummy...bit I'm ready for turkey and DM's apple pie!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I have heard of pig roast and would have known what that was. LOL. I have heard other terms too but can't think of them right now.

2 more days til Turkey Day!!!!!

Imu's are being set up all over the island as we speak, never heard of doing a turkey in them though - what a good idea! Lots of folk Hana way have been hunting this past weekend for wild pig for their imu's....
Just recently a new homeowner in Makena was having his land cleared by locals. As they were clearing they came across an ancient Hawaiian settlement in the underbrush. They downed tools and refused to work anymore until they went to Hana, brought a pig back and cooked it in an imu. After making their offerings to the ancient ones, work proceeded....

Truly a Thanks-Giving.

It warms my heart to read how all of you are spending your Thanksgiving with family and adopted neigborhood family, my love to you all.
My co-worker is thrilled to be having the day off - big football day! Saves him from having to squint at the tiny TV he usually sets up in the back area with no sound on, so the visitors who are checking in can't see or hear! Doubtless, however, the TV will be set up anyway because all my co-workers are guys, and they are all football mad. I don't think there is going to be too much work done around the grounds tomorrow.....

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

You are such a sweetheart! But then, we already knew that.

Papaya I just picked. I am planning on cutting it up and taking it in to work tomorrow for the visitors, so many of them have never tasted papaya.

And a mock orange has burst into bloom for Thanksgiving. It smells wonderful!

The papaya looks like a modern day still life. What is the name of the resort where you work?

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Kihei Akahi. It isn't really a resort, they are condos. Some people live there full time, but others rent their units out while they are not there through agents. There are 240 units but only 11 have full time residents. Many of our owners come for the winter - usually after Christmas through Easter time. It's rather a nice way to have a vacation because you are renting someones home rather than a hotel room. In our area we are all condo rentals, but in Wailea we have the large hotels such as the Grand Wailea - with prices to match!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Jenny...Interesting about the workers... I am surprised they were allowed to work...over here the OHA gets involved!!!

Recently the local police roasted 1200 lbs of wild pig in a huge IMU and sold the meat for 6$ a lb. - proceeds went to help a fellow police officer with huge bills and bad cancer. When I picked up my 6 one lb. bags all of the off duty cops were separating out the meat. I tell you...NO fat and simply too good to describe!

The Mexicans do the same with goat...they line the pit the agave leaves and it is steamed for about 24 hours. Tastes like lamb!!!

Are we thinking about food????

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Maybe instead of a large flowerbed in the center of the backyard I should dig an imu. What do ya' think?

salt cay, Turks and Caicos Islands

I guess I should have explained what an imu was:) No matter how you prepare your meal, have a wonderful day:) All this talk of laulau has me homesick for hawaii....

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Christi, works for me! I think it is a great idea!!!!!
