Donate your goods to a organic community farm!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

This will only work if you live in Houston but....I posted an ad on Craigslist looking for charities that would pickup free items in exchange for a tax receipt and got the following reply.

Quoting:
The Helping Hands Community Garden in Magnolia accepts donations of goods to be resold in our annual Mega-Sale which raises funds for us to continue and expand upon the community garden. We grow fresh fruits and veggies to help support the local food pantries and provide families with an environment to learn organic gardening.

If you would like to donate any items we would be happy to collect them and provide you with a tax receipt.

Thank you for your consideration!

Cool! Wish we had something like that in Dallas.

I know that there are lots of charities in San Antonio that take donated goods. The only thing that is hard to find is one that will pick up the stuff, and I don't know which ones will. But I wish there were an organic gardening organization like that one that's local to our area.

Linda, I had no idea there was even one near me. A quick post on Craigslist for your area asking about such might turn up some surprising results!

I wish we had one here too.

Got a great call from the local DAV in Houston, citing that they PICKUP goods (way more convenient for me than Goodwill) and still provide you a receipt.

They pick up promptly and it's a great cause. Proceeds fund your local DAV. You might check if your city/town has a chapter that does resale stores. I can't say I've even see the store in Houston but I bet they do well.

Purple Heart also does pickup in Houston - we have donated to them for years. Once on their list, they will call a week or so ahead of when they will have a truck in your area, then do a follow-up call the day before.

I know the purple heart is affiliated with the military, what exactly does their group do?

houston really is a very "global" kinda place....

I love having a place to donate my goods that will pick up. I just don't have time to count change at a yard sale all day (not to mention LOL, with most of Houston being HOA's you can't have garage sales)!

Thank-you!

Bear Creek ministries also will pick up and give a tax receipt; you will have to call them, no website, they also run a food bank for local community--Loch Katrine and 6--that's who I give all my stuff too, I figure it does actually serve the local community

*Remember* It's a good time to clean out the old for in with the new.

OT, sort of. Maybe it is up to us in the Dallas Metroplex to start a garden food bank. Something to think about, girls.

That sounds like an absolutely great idea to me. Unfortunately, I don't have any place left to grow any food at my house. What were you thinking of? A place that grows food, or accepts donations, or what?

I think a place that accepts donations would do well. All I ever hear from everyone else is how they had so many veggies they gave them away to all the neighbors, and still had to throw some away. I don't know of a place that accepts donations of fresh produce, but it sure is a shame for food to go to waste.

We tried to give fresh food from the Fielder house to Mission Arlington last year and they just can't take a little bit of this and that, they have too many to feed and they have to do it in an organized way, they would rather have the money to use as they need.

Sad that that's the truth of it. :(

But I think the way the first post works is that ppl who need the food but wouldn't otherwise know how to grow it or have a place to do so can have a "community farm" to get the food you must come grow it. And donated goods go towards seeds, water, supplies to do such. I'd say I bet someone would donate use of land but then again with all of today's liabilities.....

We kinda shoot ourselves in the foot with all of that. We try to help but then you can't help by way of A, B, C.

So true, it is very hard to get something started.
