Writing from Washington, DC --we have put up an inflatable dome http://rontimco.com/domedetail.htm over our Endless Pool, mainly to keep the pool environment warm enough to continue our swimming workout routine through the winter, but also (we hope) to serve as a greenhouse, so some of our excessive population of plants will make it through our relatively short winters here in DC. We just don't have room inside for all of them.
The amount of moisture the 24' x 20' dome air picks up is amazing, and the condensation runs off the walls as if it is drizzling steadily inside. We've now covered part of the 16' x 10' pool surface, with four 5' x 6.5' rafts to see if that reduces the humidity wihtout taking the temp down too much --we keep the water at 84 degrees, and obviously want to keep the air at 50 degrees or so (40 degrees, minimum).
The bananas, the hibiscus, the colocasia, the palms, and the oleander seem to love it, but the croton dropped all their leaves in two days. I don't want to put orchids in there, though some may like it.
Anyone ever tried this before? Any hints on how to help the plants cope with the rainforest level of moisture they'll have to endure for the next 3 - 4 months? I'm concerned about fungus un particular, but so far so good.
I'll post some photos soon.
Anyone Ever Tried an Inflatable Dome?
I think you'll need to work out something for venting unless your plants are ones that are native to humid rainforest. Fungus is a big concern as well obviously, I'd keep a close eye out and spray fungicide at the first sign of anything, otherwise it'll spready very quickly. I'd also worry a little bit about chlorine vapors and what those will do to plants. The good news is that might help keep the fungus down, but I'm not sure if it'll be good for the plants or not.
