Does anyone know a good place to look for the stone for bonsais? Thanks, Misty

Your best bet would be your local resources, nurseries. Consider the weight and the shipment. Online sources are going to be like shipping gold, or platnum? Just a thought.

Thanks, Lily. I bought a bunch of aquarium gravel and other rocks at Wal Mart today. Misty

misty-is that a jade? is it easy to make into a bonsai?

It sure is, and Jade are VERY easy. :) There are two of them there, actually. And, I have more! :)

how easy? what did you do--start out with a small and keep it pruned or propagate a large branch and use it as the trunk?

VERY easy. I started out with small ones that I already had and I prefer to take the larger leaves off and let new ones grow. Really, it is whatever you prefer-you can't do it wrong! I have MANY that I have propagated from a VERY large specimen that was given to me, but it was TOO large for me to keep in our teeny tiny house, so I gave it to my sister. You can go buy a small one and just VERY carefully bend it to the way you want it to grow and use long bread ties, or, if you have a dollar shop, they sell the 3 packs of green wire that works wonderfully. They also sell this in the craft department at Wal Mart. I would be more than happy to send you one of mine that I propagated, but I think you may be able to find it cheaper to just buy a small one, rather than to pay the shipping on one of these. Let me know if I can help you further! I am a newbie with these, but loving it! Misty

thanks you misty--i do want to try it but what kept me from bonsai was that many people said that the trees need to be outdoors a lot and i want to have that be my indoor gardening (along with way too many houseplants!)--but i know jade grows well indoors so thought that would be a good one to try--i bought a topiary book and one of the things they show they compare to bonsai--they take a plant and trim up the stem and let just the top fill in--and they even did it with a big mum!

You are very welcome! I want to try it with some other plants as well, but I just love my Jade! Now a Mum, I just can't see doing that one! I, too, have WAY too many houseplants! I did get my honey to help me build a small green house, so I have been moving some out there, just to make room for more! HA HA HA
