Smooth Sumac, Rhus glabra, at the Molly Hollar Wildscape.
It sure can be pretty for about 2 weeks.
This plant is native to Texas and just about every other state in the U.S.
Very easy to grow.
Smooth Sumac in Fall Splendor.
frostweed, Is'nt this the same kind of sumac that is as poisonous as poison ivy ? Jerry
No, Poison Sumac is Toxicodendron vernix a different plant of the same family, here is a link to that one;

Also it is not as prevalent as Smooth sumac.
Josephine.
That is such a wonderful color. I remember it up in Canada too.
Is it the same as Flame Sumac? Mine is really showy right now..along with all of the wild ones in our hill country area. :)
Melanie
Hello Melanie, Flame Sumac is Rhus lanceolata, closely related but different, it is only native to four States including Texas;

while smooth sumac is native all over the U.S. and Canada.
I like to take the fruits(?) the red things anyways, and make a tea, it tastes really fruity.
I have read about the fruit making a tasty tea, do you use it dried or fresh?
Right off the plant.
I cut them, bring them home, pour boiling water over them-----any bugs will float to the surface---add sugar and enjoy.
I think I will get some and give it a try, thank you very much.
Josephine.
You are welcome, let me know if you enjoy it.
That's beautiful. I think we have it growing on the other side of the lake... there is something over there that is flame red at the moment. Will try to walk over there soon and see for sure, would like some tea too.
Thought of you today Josephine, my elephant garlic has started to sprout! thank you.
Great! mine has too, I planted November first, I love how fast it grows.
I need to get me some Smooth Sumac. I have 2 Flameleaf Sumac and an Evergreen Sumac that Mitch gave me, along with my Chinese Pistache tree, which is also in the same family. Smooth Sumac would make a great addittion to the family!
Some of the Flameleaf Sumac out here is showing a bit of fall color, but others have already dropped their leaves. Not a very good display for the "fall color" trees out in this area. We will see when my Bigtooth Maple turns color. Maybe after the near-freeze last night, it will start.
T.J. I will see if I can get us some, I have had three plants given to me, two of the came from Mitch, but none of them made it. We'll have to try again.
Sounds good Josephine! I'll dig 'em if need be.
