Sweet and sour

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Sweet and sour seems to be a part of my German heritage. As a child I just couldn't stand the combination but now I really enjoy various dishes with this twist of flavors.

I tried a new one this evening and really enjoyed it.

Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage

I head red cabbage, shredded
2 apples, cut in small wedges
4 slices of bacon, diced and fried
4 T. brown sugar
2 T. vinegar plus same amount of sweet pickle juice(I used some relish juice)
salt and pepper

Fry bacon. Leave fat and bacon in skillet. Add rest of ingredients. Cover tightly and get it hot, then turn down and let it cook slowly until tender. Maybe fixed ahead and reheated.

This was really quite yummy.
