Gardening style

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

This is a cool sight it tells you by your answers to a few questions what your gardening style is.... It also suggests plants for your style of garden...

Mine is no surprise... Rustic, Wild and Native Garden Style

http://www.monrovia.com/GardenQuiz.nsf/Quiz!OpenForm

Have fun with it!
Carla

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Interesting, but as usual, many of the questions did not have answers that described what I like, or what I would select.
It was fun to go back & repeat it several times to see how one would arrive at a particular style.
Monrovia has been a reliable source of info for me.

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Carla, I'm right there in your category despite there being NOT ONE mention of a dahlia in the whole questionnaire.

"Rustic, wild and native" turned up for me too; although 'old, tired, and cold' would seem a better fit at this late hour after all day digging.

Katye, I know what you mean: sometimes hard to decide between those pre-fabricated answers.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

OTC - LOL!

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Pooch, are you almost done digging all those babies? You are right no mention of Dahlia's...as manicured as your Dahlia areas are I am suprised we are in the same category. This week here has been to nasty to be out, I still have bulbs to go in and am hoping to get a few dry days to get them in,,,,I want daffodils next year....I am even putting chicken wire over them so the squirrels will leave them alone!
I feel for you having to be out there with all the dripping going on...Take good care of yourself and have hot tea for your breaks.

Katye, the answers were generic, but I could find an answer that applied better than the others and when I did it came out with what I already knew...I always wanted to be cottage, but didn't like alot of the classic cottage...ie (Roses, Hollyhocks, etc) those that have to many diseases to fight here,,,So I knew I was rustic without knowing that the category existed...lol

Happy gardening,
Carla

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Carla - it is historic with me. I don't fit into any category, well, except for "Odd Duck".
The problem is that I like elements of many the "styles", but as you noted, we have to work within the confines of our cool, wet weather. This precludes growing some very fun plants. Which, by the way, is why I dumped my Hollyhocks.
Did you get an onslaught of rain this week? Not too bad at my place, but it definately put a damper on my enthusiasm...
And Pooch - I thought of you quite often this week - hoped you were able to make great strides in your end of season activities!

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Katye,
I really think most of us gardeners are in the category "Odd Duck" especially in the NW with the webbed feet and all...lol
I tried on several occaisions to get out to plant bulbs including this AM, much to my demise everytime... I would don the gear...insulated carhartt bibs, yellow bibs and rain jacket, boots, and a deludge would begin even with everyting on it is hard to plant bulbs when you can't keep your glasses dry. I managed to plant 32 daffodils this week and I have at least 50 more and some allium to get in...
I certainly hope all this effort to have daffodils pays off in the spring!
Happy gardening,
Carla

Wilsonville, OR(Zone 8b)

Hi Katye,

Same for me, they did mostly not have my choice included in the answers. But I picked the closest and ended up with Zen Garden style.

What it really should have been is the "Mostly Edible Garden Style" or something like that...

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I could of like other choices like dream car, none of those listed I want.
But I'm Rustic Thu and Thu.
Neat Link
thanks Cocoa.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Carla - we need windshield wipers on our glasses!
I had the same situation earlier, and got overheated from putting on/pulling off the gear.
Finally just made a beeline for the orchard - there was one chore that had to be accomplished, and to my amazement - the clouds parted & that sunshine felt sooo warm!
Just came in about 20 minutes ago; too dark and the temperature is dropping fast.
Or maybe I just slowed down enough to feel it?
Tomorrow - got all digits crossed for dry weather - don't care how cold it is.
Too much to do!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

This was fun, although I tried this and my first attempt resulted in "Tropical". Not me at ALL! Finagling the answers I got to Rustic,Wild, and Native. I'm reasonably happy with that, maybe with a little Zen Garden thrown in for balance-At least I've got a lot of the plants on the Zen list. I think that I'd like to join "Odd Duck" as well-Maybe we could give it a "stylish" name and call it "Eclectic PNW"???

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Susy - spot on AGAIN!
Forgot to add that the one thing that they really messed up on was the car choices - NO TRUCKS!
Now what's that all about?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Rustic, Wild and Native for me!!

I, too, rated the 'tropical' type. Actually, that's probably about right. This explains why I was still digging tender plants to overwinter today. Perhaps I need to move. It also explains why I have too many big leaved plants and not enough places to put them.
Yes, Katye, they didn't have 'trucks' as a choice, did they? Not only that, but they didn't have GARDENING as the perfect weekend activity!! Can you believe that one?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I'm still in shock, and in need of....warm weather and a nursery excursion.
Then I'll be just right!

I think they should have included these with the other choices:

1. Your idea of a perfect garden:
a. Weed free
b. One that has room for more plants
c. Finished

2. What would you rather do on your own time:
a. visit nursery(ies)
b. Buy plants
c. Put the plants you bought in the ground

3. What is your favourite piece of furniture:
a. a fancy massage chair for my aching muscles
b. the big seating area in the hot tub
c. a comfortable maintenance-free table & chair set for the finished weed-free garden with the new plants

4. Your idea of a perfect meal:
a. fresh veggies from the garden
b. the one my significant other cooked because i've been gardening all day
c. no time to eat - I've got compost to turn & leaves to dig in

5. Your favourite weekend activity:
a. Nursery-hopping
b. gardening
c. this is totally dependent upon the season & weather:
is it raining? Sunny? below 30°? Is someone going to help me in the garden, or am I doing this solo, again?

6. Your ideal home style:
a. the one with a greenhouse
b. the one with the maid that cleans while I am gardening
c. I don't care - I live in my yard

7. Your favourite music:
a. birds, tree frogs, crickets
b. an outdoor fountain
c. the sound of weeds being eliminated

8. Your dream car:
a. a truck, full of manure
b. anything reliable that has room for lots of plants
c. a lawn tractor

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

This is great! I showed this to DH and his response is " All of those need d: All of the above"

Think he's married to a gardener? ;)

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Lucky you! Mine stays as far away as possible from any potential garden activities.

Excellent quiz, Katye! Which gardening styles did you come up with?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Pixy - each time i did it on the Monrovia site, I came up with a different style.
I can only imagine what my gardening style would be if Monrovia had expanded their questions to include these answers, but probably something along the lines of
"a confused gardener without style or a life"...

I prefer the term 'pacific northwest eclectic and charming' myself. LOL!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Perfect!

Oh, right. "Pacific Northwest eclectic, charming, and perfect"!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Katye,
Mine does help, but his interest lags quickly unless building things or lawnmowers are involved.... I do think that he knows me pretty well, though, lol! We kind of have an agreement that I take care of the "edges"-beds, flowers, plants, and he does the "middle"-lawn, unless there are weeds to pull in the lawn.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I mow the lawn.

Tell him that the lawn is a 'crop' and he will want to 'farm it'. It works for many.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

LOL - I suppose this might work if there was a riding mower with a tv fixed to it.
He doesn't venture outside unless there is a specific purpose that he has deemed worthy; except to smoke cigars....

Ah - so he is work-avoidant! The crop motif doesn't work with work-avoidant types. You have to make it worth their while. If the yard is large enough, I would go for the riding lawn mower/tractor idea. He might go for it! Or, better yet, just get rid of all of the grass and do more gardens? What style would that be?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

"Staff of One: R.I.P."

LOL!!!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Hows the weather
Its snowing here.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi Tilly, Oooh, snow! Pretty! Hope you don't have to drive in it, though.

We've just got big, fat, very cold raindrops here.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Tills - please keep the snow.
I don't have a car with 4-wheel drive - I have one with 4-wheel spin!

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

My result was Rustic, Wild and Native Garden Style, but I vote for Pacific Northwest eclectic, charming, and perfect. I love your quiz Katye!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Don't worry it didn't last long.

But yes I have to drive in it, I have a Subaru wagon 4 wheel drive, and whats funny I don't know how to use it, but I guess I will learn when the time comes. Never had one before always had front wheel drive and have to drive in it allot, sort of use to it but still don't like it, only went in the ditch once in 20 years, knock on wood!!! They can keep that stuff up in the high mountains for all I care, I don't want it. unless I can stay home and then enjoy it, with a toasty fire, hot coco and a good movie or make a snowman and have a snowball with the kids and more hot coco.

This will be my puppy's first time in the snow will be fun to watch, camera ready
he will be one year old Dec. 8th.

Rac
I guess all of us PNW's are all in the same cat. How do they say it "We don't tan we rust" which makes us Rustic, in all ways, and down to earth in everything we do, true gardeners. LOL

Happy Holidays to all
This thing is like the energizer bunny keeps going and going!!!

"rustic"! LOL! good one, Tillysrat! Nice photo.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I got rustic and wild on it, although for the record there were many choices that didn't really fit. These quizzes very often make the assumption that when you are 'not gardening' that you are really not gardening.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

LOL. That's good, Al. Good point. :-)

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Hello, I'm new to this and I'm liking it. I've been gardening for years and now have a small, very full, very ecletic mature garden. That's a good thing at my age. You sound like you are all having a good time. I grew up in Poulsbo and now live on Hood Canal.

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hello Willow,
Welcome you need to just jump right in on this sight everyone is so friendly...So many good ideas, alot of laughs, some fun get togethers, and just a great bunch of new friends!
Isn't gardening grand,
Carla

Kingston, WA

Hi Willowwind. Welcome I am fairly new here as well. I am in the rain shadow somewhat up here in hansville and Union you get tons more rain and snow. My friend Beth lives down by you and says it is always snowing and up her rain. I helped design a garden by lake symington and what a beautiful but differnt soil. Rockey and pine trees. The people did a great job and I might nominate then for a golden trowel award. They have truly done a super job and am very proud of them. So if you see a bob and lana decker tell them good job.
