Temperature question

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

Most of my brugs are in the ground. The ones in pots are already in the greenhouse. Will a temperature of 39* for three hours or so ruin my outside brugs for cuttings? I have not been able to cut them back yet and we have had mild weather for a good while. But tonight it may be 39* from about 4 or 5 am till about 7 am. I have read it will be about 50* & going up after that... It also says that the wind chill will make it feel like 36* when it is 39*....

I think your still okay.. if your really worried, throw a sheet on em.. but if I remember everything I've read, they can take it down to 32 degrees if it's only for a short while. Good luck!

LOL about the sheet!!! I have too many to do that and some of them are too big... some are smaller though and I might could cover them. Thanks for the idea... didn't even think of it!

LOL Last year my yard looked like something from the Beverly Hillbillies.. I used table cloths... it was colorful.. to put it nicely..

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

oh my goodness, I'm thinking Pizza Hut table cloths here!!
You'll be fine, Carol. Really. Mine have been through colder temps and made it just fine.

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

ZZ You're cracking up about the tablecloths:-) I've done that for other plants-held down by whatever rocks and tools that were around-but with sheets. Kind of embarrassing when I throw out the big bird sheets in the front yard...my youngest is 18...Sheesh!

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL at Bev with the big bird!!!

Oh gawsh.. I wasn't gonna say anything about the sesame street one with all the rips! LOL

Yep! Do you have the set with the Snuffy pillowcase?? Looks REAl nice fitted over the aroid that comes up before the frost season is over...The neighbors are usually quite amused!

We are south east of you and are always a few degrees warmer and we are already at 37and falling. You are probably looking at a freeze. Last year our first frost was forecasted to be in the upper 20's and it got down to 14 for two nights in a row. We had cut every Brug and had them in buckets, in the metal barn. We lost all of them. We had made trades and could not take care of our part. I took off work early today to cut them back and they went into our new hoop house with heaters. Good thing because we have made more trades and need to make good.

Hi, Kenboy! Well I did notice a while ago it was 38 and they had said it would be 39 at 4 or 5 am. So I figured that it was going to get colder. I am wondering if they will not be any good to cut for cuttings... If not will the roots still be ok?

You cut yours today? I was wondering when you would be doing that. Do ya'll have any left for trade if I do get any off of mine? All of the ones you gave me at the RU are doing fine. They are in the greenhouse along with MM and GL which I dug up because they did not grow a lot. I dug up several small ones. I say I did, but you know I mean Gary did... LOL I was just in charge of telling him which ones!

We will have plenty to trade. I have already taken 500 cutting in the last few weeks and have room in the smaller greenhouse for more. If it stays above 32 you should be OK for cuttings on the hard wood.

I am south of you two and we got pretty cool this week too. I really want some of my plant to bloom so that I can identify them. The name tag faded. They are full of buds. Hope to see them before I cut them. Would like a trade if I can figure out the names again.
A little rain and a warm up is predicted so maybe....

Good luck DD, I can not tell you how many times we have cut the Brugs back and cut thousands of buds off. Last year we could hear pop, pop, pop as we were stepping on the buds as we were going back and forth cutting them down and cutting the leaves and buds off before tagging them and putting them in a bucket of water. We should of just left them on the plant, we lost them anyway. This year we have a greenhouse. I took another 144 cuttings last night with lots more to go. We have so many people wanting to trade cuttings that I think it best to give out rooted cuttings. People usually want large woody cuttings and extras just in case. I can sometimes get eight Brugs out of two large cuttings. We are taking cutting above the Y first and then trunk cuttings. On the large trunks we are going to try rooting them in water with the first Y so that we can plant a large Brug that should bloom very early.

I really have a hard time cutting off the buds. Weather sometimes forces me to do it. I take my cuttings and try to seperate them from above and below the Y. I put mine in the plastic coffee cans and stuff as many as I can in each. I write the name on the can so I can remember and keep things correctly named. I do not have nearly the variety or amount that you must have but also have a small GH that gets full of hibiscus.
I trade and sell them at the spring Master Gardeners sell. Money goes to good causes. We must get together sometimes. Would love to see your place. When things settle down maybe...

You should try paint pens, they do not fade.
