Butterfly ginger and it's seed

Beverly Hills, FL(Zone 8b)

I noticed that my butterfly ginger has red "seeds"?? I'm asuming that they are seeds. Do I dry them or is it even worth trying to grow them.

Are they hard to grow from seeds?

Those are good questions. I hope someone can answer this for you and I also would like to know: How long do they take to flower from seed? Do different kinds of ginger take the same amt. of time to flower from seed?

Bump! Bump! I would think there is more that raise gengers, and would know about seed.I also want to ask if I can move them this time of year.Please. Mike

My b.ginger had alot of red seeds last season also. Not sure if any of them came up, though.

I have a couple of new plants in the pot that I will be planting this weekend.

I never try propagating them from seeds, as the rhizomes multiply fast for me. If you intend to move them, Mike, ensure all dangers of frost is over, or heavily mulch them.

Thanks, where I have them is a bad spot, and they like the more moist areas.Mike

Mike, all my hedychiums are grown outside and occasionally, I flood their beds. Once weekly, I'll thoroughly drench their foliage, they love humidity....mimicking a true tropical climate. This is my experience.

Thats good to know, however where they are is like an old terrace, and water runs off, instead of sinking in.I didn't have a bloom last year, and of coarse we were in that terrible drought.I only hope the rizomes are still good.I don't expect any new ones, but hope I can get them going again. They were(are) in full sun too. What do you sugest?Mike

I have my gingers in the shade with alot of mulch. I do give it a good drenching of water once in awhile when it hasn't rained a few days. They do very well. Last year my b.ginger had a alot of blooms and the fragrance was wonderful.

Mike, could it be they didn't bloom for you, cause the summer's not long enough? My hedys were late blooming last year too, but sufficient for me to enjoy their beauty and fragrance. I have most grown in full sun.
If the water runs off too fast, is there a way to build a retaining wall around the bed?
Mimi, I'm sure you have plenty of butterflies visiting your blooms!

Duuuh!!! How could I've forgotten that the reason we have the short summer last year, was because of the late frost in April!!!!! We lost a month!!!
Next week, it's supposed to be in the 30's here! Looks like my precious hedys' blooms will be late again! It's always the white ones that bloom last for me!!
