Hi,
I planted garlic in Earthbox first of October 50% sprouted and 50% did not. I was curious so I dug down to see what was happening. Some of the cloves had nice root systems but no top growth but about 25% of the cloves were shrivled up and doing nothing. I decided to replant. I am putting in another 50 cloves tomorrow.
Anyone here have success with garlic in container - any type container??

Garlic in containers - any type container
DL ~ yes, there was a thread about this ~ let me see if I can locate it. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/756161/
IME, you will not get 100% germination. I have found those doing nothing will sprout the next season in ground. That is not uncommon when they are in a bed. I got to questioning that as I thought I had dug up all to relocate the bed and am still getting volunteers in the old location.
Last winter NONE of my garlic sprouted before spring. This year we had a warm spell and 12 of 100 sprouted. But we are cold again, so maybe they will go back to sleep now. They are sort of like daffodils - you just have to have faith that something is happening under ground :-)
Thanks for the link podster.
kmom246 -- did you have your garlic in containers??

I grow most of my garlic in raised beds; this year I am also growing about half the crop in the ground. In the winter I grow them in little 6" pots and harvest the greens like "green onions", but they get burned out that way and don't produce a bulb.
