I read about makeing hypertufa pots on a forum, But I didnt want just plain pots, I was inspired to put faces on them from those antique 'Jug Heads'
This one is my favorite so far, I used rocks for teeth, and eye balls, It is still laying down to dry.
Look what I've been makeing
Im gonna call them my garden gaurdians.

The are very unique! Very creative too! Are they actual pots to put plants in? Can you describe a little how you did this?
Thanks!
Cis
Thank you!! they were a lot of fun to make too!! They will hold a large plant.
I used the hypertufa recipie and formed the pot itself in the mold. In my case it was a plastic garbage can, and a cardboard box. when it was solid on the inside (24hours)
I took them out of the mold and layed it down. (Its still a little soft on the outside). I mixed up some more hypertufa and hand molded the faces on one side. and left them to dry for a couple more days.
Wow, over my head LOL. Sounds wonderful, though! Very unique. Thank you! :) Have a great *mold* day! :D

WOW! These are amazing! I love them and I think they would look fabulous in a garden. You will have garden people.
Ann
You know, I was thinking about makeing some little garden people, Just kinda have them here and there around the plants, Kinda like gnomes. I love those little guys!
Those are soooooooo cute! They will look great in your garden! That is a great idea!
Have you sculpt before?
Jeanne
never tried it before, but used to draw. Not much different, just (thicker)? cant think of the right word....LOL
Those are really cute! You did a good job!
My Mom drew, took a few lessons, tried water colors, oils, and a little of every medium. But she always wanted to sculpt. She read some doll magazines on proportions, general articles here and there, bought a few books, then found a recipe for "salt dough". She first made the frame out of anything that would give her the shape, then formed the dough over the frame. She sculpt the faces, hands, basically the whole thing. We would go to her house and she would have an indian's arm suspended by string from the kitchen cabinet. She would later put a sculpey tomahawk in his hand. She did those type dolls for awhile and then moved to clay. She sculpt all kinds of dolls, baby, toddlers, teenagers, adults, indians, and eventually Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus. The adults stood about 24" tall. She would make the heads, shoulder plates, hands, legs, feet, of clay and then make a mold (she learned from a book she bought) and poured them in ceramic. She fired them in a kiln, painted them, made them soft bodies, made their clothes, and then gave them to her daughters.....and sometimes others, so now I have a large doll collection! Everybody that sees them is in awe, and says, "Oh, do you collect dolls?" I just shake my head "no". LOL
They are a joy to look at! She did them, just to fulfill a childhood desire!
I told you this just to share the moral, or inspiration that if you decide to take your sculpting further, don't hesitate.
She wants me to do that also, and so now after seeing your pots maybe I will. I would enjoy doing things I could put in my yard. (I don't need anymore dolls!)
Your pots are lovely and will be admired by all that see them! It's especially nice to be able to say that they are your original artist creations when asked where you got them! Good luck with your project you never know where it will take you!!!!!!!!
Texadsgal...........what an inspirational post for kelbroindy and all of us :)
Sis
Texasgal, Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement. Your dolls would really be something to hang onto and passed down. Your mom is a real artist!!
I have never been afraid to try something, if it dont work- hey, at least I tried!! And there have been a lot of things that didnt work... Im just trying to put some 'art' into the garden.
Kel..your garden people are very special. You are very creative and I hope you will post pics when you get these babies planted. Keep on sculpting..I think you are a natural!
Awesome job Kel! I love these!!
Janet
I love this idea and your faces are all so expressive! Gnomes are cute but I much prefer these because they are different and original so they reflect the artists spirit in a way nothing else can.
You all are so nice!!! Thank you.
Kel, I mailed your herb seeds before we left, should get them Monday or Tuesday.
Love the hyperturfa head pots. Here's something you might like to try, a green man. But make him or her a flat pot. I bought my green man at a renfest in Sterling NY that my youngest son was working. He is the shyest of my kids but once he puts on his kilt and brogue he can talk your ear off
James was telling all about the handcrafted booths with their wonderful array of handblown glass, handworked jewelry, windchimes, illuminated book plates, calligraphied sayings and ceramic art. Well, when he mentioned these faces with leaves for hair, I knew he was talking about a green man, and I had wanted one for the garden for a long time. We went to the fair the next weekend and I bought mine, pretty pricey, too. Well I always wished I had another that was more than just a face, one with a shallow pot behind the face so you could add cuttings in water, or fill it with flowers or vines in dirt. Hyperturfa might be just the thing to mold one out of. I can just see Sevidras chocolate mint (check out her thread) for wild hair.
I do hope you will try to make one.
OOh, that does sound cool!! I will have to look up the thread. It seems like I have seen them before, But I cant remember exactly what they look like. I do remember the leaves for hair.
That is so great that your son loves crafts and garden stuff. I wish I could get mine to care about it a little. my 2 boys like to see the garden. and sit back and relax around the plants, but get their hands dirty? no way!! My daughter does just a little.
Thank you Mittsy, for the new ideas and the seeds!!! Kelly
I love the faces. Would you give me the formula for making the hypertufa faces. Great 4me, my husband will have a ball making them for me. He is 87 and loves being creative, this fills the bill. Thanks
