Hi Moodene,
Remember my friend that I wanted to call you about a pig since she wanted to get one? Well, here's a pic of Pearle that has now been with her one month. Annie, the pup, has been with her 3 months and they are the best of friends. For now now, the sleeping arrangements work well.

Pearle's full name is Pearle the pink pot bellied pig.....try saying that 10 times! LOL!

Hello, banana-lovers! I don't know one banana from another, but I have a small apparently dwarf banana with red splotches on the leaves. I've lost the name of it. It's about 2 years old, about 4 1/2 feet tall. It survived last winter in the greenhouse and just went back in for our Virginia, USA, winter.

My question is, would I be better off to keep it in the greenhouse, or in stripping the leaves off and putting it under the house?

Also, from following the link above, I have now learned that I was probably wrong to separate pups from the mother when they were a few inches tall. There have been two pups, and they both died. Next time there is a pup, I will leave it on until it grows to the size of the mother - but will repot the pair until the little one grows up a bit.

BrightStar,

The pups don't have to be as large as mama, but I do let them get a decent size before I wean the pups.....at least 12" or so. That's because the pup has to develop its own roots and they have to be big enough to have done that. I think the trick is to make sure you get a good clean cut in at an angle so that you get some roots, but definitely wait till the pups get some size to them.

Thank you. Which is better, though, for the winter - greenhouse or dormancy under the house?

Well, I've never had a GH (poor me. Maybe Santa will bring me one if I'm good) so I've only done them under the house. When I did that I didn't even strip the leaves as I only had 3 and they weren't over 6' tall at the time so I could handle them easily.

This year I'm in a different house and it's on a concrete slab so I have no crawl space so I dug them up and put them in pots in the garage. Again, this year they weren't big as I moved this summer and their growth was disrupted. In the garage, I'll only water them a tad (how much is a tad? LOL!) about once a month since they're really going dormant.

In the greenhouse they wouldn't go dormant so you would keep up the watering, etc. As for which is best........I hope someone will jump in that has experience in both under the house and a greenhouse and answer that. I would think that if they're in the greenhouse (as opposed to dormancy) you would get a jump on the growth for next spring. Are they fruit bearing? If so, I would definitely put them in the greenhouse to get bananas growing earlier next year and (hopefully) produce and ripen for you before winter sets in again.

No fruit yet. It is about 2 years old now, 2nd year in the greenhouse. I was told that it needed a bigger pot to bear fruit, so last spring I put it in a bigger pot, but no fruit. I keep hoping. Thanks for responding!

I've got to get to bed (big day tomorrow) but I'll check out the link tomorrow. Thanks!

BDunn, thank you for the link. I printed it out so I can save it. It gave me a lot of ideas! I like the leaf bag idea especially. That would save some space in the greenhouse!
