Veggie pond

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Cleaning out my Veggie filter pond and the wire hardware cloth is gone. LOL
Need to switch to something else to hold the pea gravel off the crates.
Anyone have any suggestions??

Rigid plastic grating? It would not degrade and should be easy to cut to size. I think you should be able to find something like that in a hardware store. If the holes are too big you could use weed barrier fabric over the plastic grates.

Weed barrier fabric would not let the plant roots get to the water. That is what cleans the water.
Plastic grating where do you find it.

I would imagine hardware stores would carry something like that or would be able to give you some good ideas.

Am curious what you come up with on this one! I haven't seen anything plastic and ridgid but small enough to hold pea gravel. The dollar store has some containers that have holes in them (why would anyone want containers with holes in them?) but I think even they are too big.

Well I had to settle with metal lath. 2 X 8 sheet for 9.99 each.

What is the purpose of the lathe and pop crates? Haven't seen that before.

Gravel goes on top of the lath and the plants are set in it.
Their roots go thru the gravel and lath to get water in the space below.
Water from the filter goes thru the roots cleaning it. Veggie Filter.
Like a bog garden with a stream under it. LOL

Oh ok, and the water then goes into another pond?

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Yes.
I am moving the water fall down to the Veggie pond.and doing away with the stream

Seeing it all in a picture like that makes waay more sense. Thank you for posting such great pics and explaining slowly for me! ;)

Isn't that going to disintegrate like the hardware cloth?

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

I imagine it will. But hopefully it will last a lot longer.
Moved the Bio filter. Will use wire mesh and concrete it in place.

How about undergravel filters for aquariums? They do exactly what you need. However, you would need several to cover that much area and I'm not sure how you would support them. They never degrade or leach anything and they will hold nearly any size gravel while allowing roots to grow through.

Search under plastic mesh and all kinds of stuff comes up.

BTW, that's pretty neat what you're doing there.

That's not a bad idea, I may have some old undergravel plates laying around, too!

Are you looking for the plastic grating that would go into the bottom of a ceiling flourescent light fixture? Its 2' x 4' and I've seen it at Home Depot electrical dept. Good luck, nice project.

They have too big a hole. Lets the gravel fall through.

I'll keep thinking.
