ruellia speciosa

Sarasota, FL

Just got one today and can't find any info on it. Anyone know what this plant likes? How much sun and cold will it take? Thank=you.

I'm not familiar with that particular one, but the other ones I know all like sun and are hardy to about zone 8 so they should be fine for you. Some Ruellias can be pretty invasive in your climate though so you may want to use caution until you figure out how this one will behave.

Anna,
I've not seen that Ruellia down here, but the two I have are definitely rambunctious!
The Ruellia tweediana is downright obnoxious, I am trying to eradicate it. I put one plant in about 10 years ago, not knowing its tendency to want to take over the world.
The other is a small Ruellia (can't remember the species) that I got from Selby also at least 10 years ago. I find it here and there in the garden and in the lawn, but it's easily removed from where I don't want it. They are both indestructible, sun/shade, it doesn't matter.
I could only find one pic of your plant, is this it?

Towards the bottom of the page.
It's pretty, does it have a fragrance?
I hope it behaves better than some of the others!

Cathy, I saw that photo also, but it is not my plant. The leaves and the flowers are different. I have not seen a photo on the internet. I bought it at the Selby members plant sale today, and they had a short stem in a vase with two trumpet like coral flowers to show what the plant can do. My plant is a rooted cutting and quite small. No flowers yet. It was well-labeled as if there was no doubt about it. I'm not sure what to do with it. I have other ruellias, but this one looks quite different.

Cool, a mystery Ruellia! Coral flowers- sounds really beautiful. When it gets a little bigger, maybe you can post a pic of it, I'd love to see it.
Thanks, Cathy

I have the 'Katy's Dwarf Ruellia' outside blooming in pink, white and lavender for a ground cover. It will take anything nature dishes out to it.

On the other hand I have a variegated tiny tiny ruellia (but she can grow almost a foot tall) that I grow on the front porch. She is real delicate looking. Let me find her from a vendor and see what the name is.

I found it at kartuz........yours , that is. Mine is not listed.

They call it Ruellia elegans 'Coral'

Gessiegail,

I've had the ruellia elegans before. It is fairly small and has bright red flowers. Someone told me this ruellia gets 10 feet tall. I wish I could see a photo and just find out where to plant it at this point. Thanks.

Let me keep searching for the right one. The only ruellia I know about that gets real tall is the wild ruellia with the purple blooms. This is a mystery to me but would love to try and find out what it is.........

I had no idea there are so many Ruellias! Searching online has been quite an adventure, more plants to add to the wish list...

I just read that there are more than 300 plants in the ruellia group. You may need ecrane to hunt this one down............

I was already here and I'm not familiar with that particular one.

Alright. I got a lead at least. Tropica says that ruellia affinis is a synonym of ruellia speciosa. When I looked that up, the flower was the same as the one I saw in the vase. I got a little more info in that it is from Brazil, and in its habitat grows to 6 meters.Still don't know anything else about its culture. Sounds like a monster tho. Thanks for sticking with me folks!

Here is a photo. As you can see, not a lot of leads from this thing right now.
