New Seedling

Katy, TX

I have a new seedling to show you but I didn't catch it until late in the day and it doesn't look as good. I don't know the parentage as it was some random seeds I started about 18 months ago. It has a little trouble with reflexing but if it gets over that it's got possibilities. I'll post a better one when I get one.

Here is another bloom I'm quite proud of. Hybredized by Barry Schlueter it is called Top Secret. It stands up well and holds it's blooms up and presents them very well. It is about 7" in size here at my house and has just recently changed to what seems to be its winter colors. A more solid red with less yellow.

Thanks and Take Care..........Gene

Gene, you've been hiding your light under a bushel! Your seedling is very interesting and worthy of cloning and study. Don't you need someone experienced to . . help you evalutate it?
;-)
Congratulations,

Gene, that first one is a beauty!

I am jealous! That is a really wow plant! I have never even thought of growing hibiscus from seed. Where would you even order seed for a tropical hibiscus? Does anyone know?
That sounds like a good fun 18 month project.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

The thing with tropical hibiscus seeds is you don't know what you're going to get from them since they won't come true from seed. Sometimes you can end up with gorgeous ones like this one, but others may be less interesting. American Hibiscus Society is one place that a lot of people get seeds from. Beware of the people on Ebay with photoshopped pics of unreal looking hibiscus claiming that they're selling seeds for those plants--not only are the pics fake, but the fancy tropical cultivars won't come true from seed anyway.

I stay away from ebay anyway. Shopping on ebay is not even a possibility but I do thank you for the information, ecrane. I think I might just order some seed for fun.

Gene, welcome aboard. I'm glad to see you here.
A nice seedling. Does it come from one of your own seeds? It looks like to have Time for Magic as one of the parents. Do you have it?

So how do you go about collecting seed and what are the requirements of planting them? I have several different ones and would love to see what I came up with.

Here is a book if you should want to invest in it that is worth the money. It will tell you all you need to know about most the subjects that come up here including Hybidizing and many other topics. Barry Schluelter is a large contributer and a very knowledgeable source to this book. Hope this will help...................Gene
