New African Violets from Hill Country AV nursery

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I needed some new african violets to propagate. These are the ones I picked up. Their blooms are spent and need to be taken off each plant and the plants are still in only 2" squares so I have my work cut out repotting today. I couldn't find the pink ones and blue ones i was hoping for.

Also, I got some new streps. I call them OK but not what I was hoping for. Their pics will have to come later as they bloom.

This is called 'Iceberg' and the hybridizer is unknown

(I think this nursery must order from Lyndon Lyons as most are hybridized by this greenhouse)

'Omaha Thunder' and hybridizer not known. She is outstanding! I decided to buy for the blooms this time rather than foliage.

Talk about a spent bloom (LOL)
but her name is 'Midnight Plum' by LLG (I guess this means Sorano should have been used for LLG through all of these with his greenhouse names but that is what the tags say)

VERY pretty my friend!
Did you pick up any new streps?
Sounds like you had a GREAT trip, saw your "hoya haul" on the hoya forum, WOW!
You need to go into business my friend :)
How Beautiful!

'Evening Splendor' by LLG

******good morning, Kim.
I did get some streps but nothing to rant and rave about. The whole state convention was somewhat of a bummer as people were allowed to shop early and grab the good streps. I can always start asking for good leaves from people like Brenda. Brenda, are you out there this morning? (LOL)

Poor 'Victoria Velvet' with her worn out blooms! She is also from LLG

'Tsarina' with no blooms but check out her girl foliage. I haven't updated my First Class but she is not on my list as of now so I know nothing about her.

'Pink Sensation' is much prettier in person than in a pic.

Show over ladies and gentlemen

********edited to say I am posting Green Gate Nursery pics on the begonia forum and leave out the hoyas

Just checking in for a bit here today, it's dark and raining and I'm in the mood to cook today! :0) Chicken and dumplings anybody??

Such pretty violets Gail, I love that Ice Berg!!!!! Those type of edges always catch me! The begonias were awesome too!

I have a box headed your way come Tuesday (since the PO is closed on Monday) full of strep leaves, I'll make sure I insulate it up as we have snow moving in next week that is supposed to sock us in for several days.

I'm going to go search for more of your pictures on the other forums this evening, it's so fun to live vicariously!! LOL

I can just "picture" it now .... Scientist Gessie, in her Lab, getting supplies ready for all those new leaves!!

I really am a nutcase when it comes to plants and you know it, plantladylin!

My friends called to say that they were in Corpus Christi. When they started to explain why they weren't coming to my house today, I started laughing and told them I was sooo glad as I am potting up babies from their mamas still!! And...I am still in my pajamas for the day.

I just put new pictures on the tropical forum of the trip from just one nursery. I will do the others later. There are some on the orchid forum and begonia forum, too.

My strep blooms aren't pretty enough to post but i will let you all know later their names.

I am now trying to recoup from the trip as my friend came down here last Saturday and we started first in my area before hitting the road north on Tuesday morning.

I just love to take the leaves and make babies most of all. Glad you like that Mama's Backhoe........she is great!

Gail, what a bunch of beauties you bought. How many did you buy? And how much were they? Inquiring minds want to know:-)
Pink sensation and Toy Sunset are my favorites.

I was wondering, do you buy them just to propagate? I didn't understand that when I read your post.

Ok.........one post and back to work in the kitchen potting up avs.

All his plants are 6.50 and they are each a good size plant. The minis, standards begonias........everything is marked 6.50. I always buy a plant that has extra leaves on it so I can take off at least 2 or 3 to propagate.

Between now and Christmas i hardly know whether I am coming or going. Tomorrow i am playing with my company from Albuquerque. Her husband is going deep sea fishing while we scope out any and all shops. (not for plants..boohoo)

If you keep track maureen of what you like...whenever i post.....just contact me about about 15 weeks later and you can have nice size babies from the mamas. I have lots of babies now but no time to ship. It is very time consuming. Once i get through the Thanksgiving holidays I am hoping to have a good couple of weeks just for plants.

(Zone 1)

Gail: Your photo's of all of the plants from both of those nurseries you visited are awesome! I've heard the saying "Everything is bigger in Texas".... and I believe it. The leaves on some of those AV's were so huge! And those hanging baskets of hoya's and well ..... just every plant, so big and healthy!

You are a propagating fool ... I mean that in a good way! I can just picture your house! You are the envy of many of us! You've told us what fertilizer you feed your plants now I want to know what vitamins you take! I wish I had some of your energy! Maybe that is why you stay so young looking ... you are so active!

hmmm ... maybe it's those naps you take? I've heard professionals talk about power naps and how they are good for you. I actually fell asleep sitting in the chair today ... for about 20 minutes and the durn phone woke me up! I think I ought to train myself to take a little nap every day .... for at least an hour!

Have a great day shopping with your friend tomorrow! Hope her hubby catches lots of fish on his deep sea fishing expedition too!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, my friend. The first thing you need to learn about naps is:
1. Close the door to your bedroom and unplug the phone
2. Pull all the blinds down so it is dark (I even have black out shades in the bedrooms)
3. Turn the air conditioning down a notch or two so it is freezing
4. Keep a big fan in your room on the floor that blocks out any possible noise.
5. Always get in your own bed with lots of covers and your favorite pillow.

I have to have my naps...........and hour ones..........not 20 minutes for me! A full sleep cycle is 1 hr and 20 minutes so you need an hour's nap to do any good.

****edited to say I forgot the most important thing of all for a good nap. Always take your clothes off and put your comfy pajamas on!

Sounds like a good plan to me, Gail! Great advice! I really wanted more than 20 minutes today. Look at me thought ... after 1:00 a.m. and I'm still wide awake and will be up at 7! I need daytime naps!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I can easily do what you are doing by staying up late. I went to bed at midnight last night but it isn't a problem as long as I take a nap during the day.

When I get all revved up and moving quickly, it is hard for me when i get too tired. Sleep doesn't come easily.
