(1) I live on the border of zones 8a & 8b. My zingiber neglectum "Jewel Pagoda" still has healthy
looking leaves growing. It is in a pot in a greenhouse which will be heated only to keep things
from freezing. It has not bloomed yet, but is quite large. When should I stop watering it for the
winter, and at that time should I water at all or let it go completely dry for the winter?
(2) Same conditions on hedychium greenii. I have many other hedychiums in the ground which do
just fine there in winter with no atttention except for a little mulch. I have read that Greenii
cannot be allowed to dry out or it will not bloom. This has also been proven by my
experience. I plan to leave it in the pot. Do I completely stop watering it in the winter, and if
so, when? If I stop watering in the winter, when should I resume watering in the spring?
Your answers will be greatly appreciated!

Two winterizing questions on two separate gingers:
Kay,
When your neglectum dies back (goes dormant) then you stop watering, do not water again until spring and then only a little until your dormant ginger pokes it's head out of the soil. Your greenii should stay evergreen in your greenhouse, if so then water just enough to keep evenly moist, as it will use less water in the colder months. These rules follow for all of your gingers. Ones that go dormant naturally need no water until it is time for them to reemerge in the spring and evergreen gingers should be watered as long as they are above ground, but not if they freeze back.
Hopefully I have not totally confused you. If you have any other questions or if I have made you more confused :) please feel free to email me anytime

Thanks Liz, you have helped more than just Kay.
Liz you explained it very well. I really appreciate your help.
Kay
You are both quite welcome. I am never sure if I have over explained myself :)
