Getting too long for Dial-ups :)
Cattle Panel Hoophouse, Part 3
Hi all! Gonna get my GH house started real soon! Have a great night. Misty
Thanks Punkin!!
Yes, you did because I asked you to.
Jeanette
ahh.. I knew there was a good reason :)
Hey Jazz, do you know what day that was? I just went and looked. November 14, 2006. Almost a year to the day. Only 5 days off. Funny how we came back to it.
Ok, Misty, be sure to send pictures.
Molly, I've been meaning to ask you what do you do to keep spider mites out of the GH? They are so hard to work with. The first year I had brugs I put them in my bedroom and I can't stand any kind of bugs, spiders, etc. I used a spray bottle with peroxide/water in it and just sprayed anything that looked like one or anything that moved. Like maybe a fruit fly?? What do they call them, can't think of it. Been away from the brug forum too long.
Jeanette
Wow.. That's pretty wild Jnette.. wonder if we will keep this one going for a year..lol
Jeanette that thing that looks like a fruit fly would you mean gnats?
If you don't mind chemicals try Bonide Liquid Eight. It has a product that duplicates what's in chysanthemums. I used it and it killed aphids, spider mites and gnats. Gone real fast! I only found this product recently after working to rid myself of these things for almost a year. I wouldn't use it in the house though. That company does offer other products that they consider safe for inside the house. You should see the infested plants growth spurt once this stuff killed the bugs!!!
MollyD
Another thought on spider mites...and I just ran into someone yesterday who tried this and found it very effective as well...Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub - imidacloprid. This is a systemic. Mix 2T/gal and water it in. My experience is that it works for about 6 months or so. Note that this is off-label use. Also controls mealies/scale/aphids. I use this on many containerized nonedibles in the GH.
Molly, you are right. The mind is going. LOL
Molly is the Bonide Liquid Eight a systemic? I use a systemic, but I also used it in my bedroom and will never do that again. Not that anything happened, but it isn't a good idea.
SB, I keep forgetting to get that Bayer product. Bayer bought the stuff I use from Hi Yield. But it is a granular and stinks if you use it in an enclosed area. I wonder if you could use the product you use in an enclosed area since it is a liquid? 6 months would be wonderful. It would see me thru the winter. The Hi Yield systemic I have now is only good for about 6 weeks.
Jeanette
Jeanette I would not spray it in a bedroom. It's not a true systemic in that it works on the leaves rather than by being absorbed by the roots. I used the Bayer systemic granules last year but my plants had problems with it. Even though I gave it in weaker amounts than suggested it seemed too strong for them in pots.
MollyD
So the Liquid Eight is a spray? Interesting. This year I put my brugs into dormancy in an unheated room in the basement, no heat and no lights. I did treat them with systemic when I brought them in, plus I stripped all the leaves off. Except the very newest. Each year I try something different and I still don't get them to bloom for me before the frost hits. If this doesn't work then they are gone.
Jeanette
Jeanette you should post over on the Brugmansia forum before you decide to get rid of them. Lots of really talented people there that might be able to tell you what you need to do for your plants.
MollyD
Hi all, the green house is almost done! I have to send this to you cause it is too cute not to pass on:
Happy Gardening!
A teenage granddaughter
comes downstairs for her date
with this see-through blouse on and no bra.
Her grandmother just pitched a fit,
telling her not to dare go out like that!
The teenager tells her
'Loosen up Grams.
These are modern times.
You gotta let your rose buds show!'
and out she goes.
The next day the teenager comes down stairs,
and the grandmother is sitting there with no top on.
The teenager wants to die.
She explains to her grandmother
that she has friends coming over
and that it is just not appropriate....
The grandmother says,
'Loosen up,
Sweetie.
If you can show off your rose buds,
then I can display my hanging baskets.
Happy Gardening.
Cute Misty. Still want to see the greenhouse. Jeanette
It's really cute Misty!
MollyD
Oh that's nice Misty! Look like it will give you some good service!
Thanks! Now I just need to fill it up! LOL
Oh, I dont think that will be too hard
Looking good Misty. You'll fill that up fast. They are so much fun. Jeanette
Misty ~ what type of heat will you be using?
Hi all. Thanks! Nah, doubt it will be very hard to fill it up! :) I have not decided on a heat source as of yet, any suggestions? Thanks, Misty
I am interested in these suggestions also Misty.
Jeanette
I am thinking it won't be so hard since the North side of it is against the house. The way our weather has been over the last several years, I don't think that I will need much heat, but things could change, and I could be dead wrong! LOL
Sounds like it is South facing. Great. My sister's is and she doesn't have to use much heat in the winter because she gets great sun exposure.
Jeanette
Yep, the sun comes up from the south side and pretty much stays on it til the evening. I was hoping to not have to use much heat! I did remember to get my thermometer today so I have to get it in there. Misty
You better watch for it to get too hot during the day. Maybe a heater just at 40 degrees at night would do it. Does it have automatic vents for overheating?
Jeanette
No, we hadn't gotten that sophisticated, yet. :( I guess if it gets too warm I can always have the door open, til we figure out how to do the ventilation. I also bought another GH at Lowe's today, along with a few new plants! LOL
MISTY!! What is this new GH?
Jeanette
Let me see if I can find the thread where I know another one is posted and I will see if I can swipe it and post it! LOL If not, I will take one of mine tomorrow. :)
Ok, found it. It is posted by kwanjin on November 10th. She is the one that got me to looking for it! LOL Thanks kwanjin! :) Hope it is ok to post another forum, so here goes! :)

The reason I asked what type of heat is I have a small plant shelter. It is not against the house but in my zone 8a, I lost some less hardy plants last year with no heat. I was wondering what provisions you had for heating in your zone 6b Misty.
Thanks Jazz! I was gonna do that but I was afraid that might be considered piracy! LOL
As a newbie I still have a LOT to learn. :) And that was the correct one!
Pod, I am thinking of buying a small quartz heater as mine is pretty small and the North side is against the house. The small portable ones I am just keeping the cheaper annuals in and taking my chances, just to see what they will do. Each of the annuals that are in the portable Gh are doing great, but the ones I had planted just like what is in there are dead and gone. We have to get the door done before I can put too many other's I have in there. Maybe the rain will stop today and we can get it done. Misty
