Does anyone have a good source for the heavy black plastic pots I see in so many of your posted pictures? I've been looking online, but most of them are so expensive!
Brug pots source?
I do not know where to get them from I posted that I am in need of some pots here on daves garden and I got some........
You got some from the people on here? There has to be somewhere that has them at a decent price.
what about lowes or home depot hell i would even try kmart
I checked at Lowes last week. (No Kmarts or HD around here) All they had was the normal plastic and terra cota ones. None of the black "plain janes". I'll search some more online.
Here is a good link..

Thanks Joyce! Hopefully next spring I'll need to plant a few brugs in bigger pots!! (crossing my fingers! LOL!)
i get mine from Freecycle, there are always landscapers and lawn services that have an abundance to get rid of.
Bite your tongue cat!!!! LOL Hopefully you will have enough room you mean... LOL More than likely, your gonna need a bunch!
If you only need a couple, HD usually has the nursery pots fairly cheap. I've never been so lucky to get any from freecycle, (great idea!) but I have been known to stop on the side of the road and ask workers for some when they are doing landscaping.. Just gotta bleach em and clean em real good.
I HOPE I need a bunch! LOL!
What is freecycle?
Cat, the best deal I could find was through A. M. Leonard. 55 5 gal. pots for $$66.49.
Tussee
It's a site were locals post unwanted good junk.. LOL Things that are too good to throw away.. freebiez.. www.freecycle.com then find your area.
I get mine in the spring from landscapers too. I don't use them in my garden, I prefer not to use black, they get very hot, but they can be sunk into the ground with the plants inside, makes getting them up in the fall much easier. I was lucky enough to find stacks of really good pots on clearance at Home Depot for $1.00 each. All sizes from 3 to 10 gallon and all matching, sure looks nice in my garden with all of the pots matching.
Thanks for all the input everyone. I'll check out freecycle and sounds like a trip to the nearest Home Depot might be in order. And I've bookmarked both the url's just in case.
Another question? After they root and the roots fill the cup, if I read all the threads right, I put them in a gallon pot? How long do they stay in there before moving them to a bigger one? And what size is next?
I don't leave my cuttings in water till they root. I put them in soil when white nubs form. I used to leave them in water, but lost too many that way. I usually can pot within a week after I start them in water.
When I have my plants outdoors I just stick the cuttings right into the pots with the mother plant, they root in days. I never put green cuttings in water. I dust with some rooting hormone and right into just damp soil.
I like to keep a window box planted with a nice loose soil handy, I pop my cuttings in and this keeps them till they start to show new growth, then I give them their own pots. I put mine into 4 inch pots. I have been told, don't know how much truth there is to it, but that plants do better in small pots till they fill the pot with roots. I fill the 4 inch pots with half good potting soil, half worm castings, you should see how fast they grow. I do put bigger cuttings into bigger pots.
This summer I had many 6 and 7 inch cuttings in may grow to well over 7 foot tall plants and bloom for me. not bad considering I live in Northern NY and have a short growing season.
I read some of your posts about the soil with worm castings on another thread Theraglady. Wish I had acces to some!
I read somewhere that alot of people start them off in 16 or 20 oz plastic cups with holes in the bottoms. Brugie told me she doesn't let hers root in water, so as soon as the nubbies show I am putting them in their own plastic cup, in miracle grow mixed with a little perlite. I was wondering how you guys know when to move them to a bigger pot though?
Hello theraglady...You are in about my zone. Where do you keep and how do you keep your new potted cuttings? I have a few and need to do something with them...Grow them on in heat, light, or make sure they DON"T grow much giving em light but cool surroundings. Which do you do??
Also should one fertilize in either condition? I have passed up all the box stores soil mixes as the come with fertilizers and soil moist!! Both or one. But I assumed neither was good this time of year. Am I confused?? I am heading out soon and either will make my own with compost/manure/vermiculite/perlite/composted peat/sand...
Or I can purchase but with the additions of soil moist/fertilizer in the mix what would you choose???
Thanks for any help.
Julie
Julie, I'm new to brugs but have read all kinds of posts on here. Seems to me I remember several saying the miracle grow is ok as long as it's not the one with soil moist. That there isn't enough fertilizer in there to worry about it as it's slow release. One of the experts needs to chime in though. I'm only repeating what I read! :-)
I've never used the soil moist MG, (I'm old fashioned, I like to water) lol. I don't think the kind with the fertilizer will harm them. Don't add any more fertilizer, though. I'm not an expert, either. But I'm getting a lot of experience and having fun growing brugs. I've got some that nubbed up in water and I stuck them in 4 and 6 inch pots. They are on a heat mat under lights in my mini greenhouse in the basement. I want to tell you Cat, I buy those big 25 gallon tubs with the cord handles for around $5-7. Lowes, HD, even Dollar General has them. I spray painted a couple with Fusion Paint for plastic and they've held up wonderfully. Plus they have the handles for carrying from spot to spot.. I've also just asked to buy a couple big nursery pots from our local nursery.. They weren't too expensive, either, but they didn't have any 25 gallon size or bigger when I was there. Here's a pic of Maya in a corded handle "tub".
I have found those black pots at independent nurseries...usually at a nominal price.
So they eventually need a 25 gallon pot? Wow! I'll have to look around next time I'm in the city and see if Lowes or HD has any. We have a Dollar General here. There is also an Amish nursery in a nearby town. I may check with them.
AuntB, do you go to the roundups? Maybe I will meet you at the spring one. I couldn't go to the fall RU this year but am planning on going this spring.
Hello every one Thanks for the help. i can make it but it is nice to have a bag or so when necessary!! I have to be prepared cause everything freezes here soon. Stores sometimes put the garden area away after Christmas.
So Thank You and for the heads up on pots too.
Julie
I went to a small local landscaping/nursery place and asked for some. They had a back greenhouse full of empty pots...all sizes. I even offered to pay for them, luckily I was dealing with the brother of the owner and he was glad to get rid of as many as I wanted..said his brother would have charged..LOL
So if you have anything like that where you live, it never hurts to ask..
Kris
Good deal Kris! That is the hardest part... asking. LOL But once you do, it's amazing how easy it is! Good for you!
I recently saw a huge stack of 5gal pots in a garbage pile at a place that had just landscaped.. I swallowed my pride and asked... OH Yeah, I ended up with dirt all over my car and a big stack of pots! I was never so happy to dig in the garbage pile! LOL
You guys are making me want to live in the city again!!! LOL! No landscaping in this rural area!
Great idea, Kris. Cat, you don't HAVE to have a 25 gal pot, but I like to put them in as big as possible and still be able for my son and his friends to lift. It just gives them more growing room. I did go to the fall round-up this year.. it was great fun. It's so nice to put a face with a DG name. I will be there in the Spring, if it's not conflicting with graduations/birthdays/weddings... It will be nice to meet you... I've got some brug cuttings rooting right now to trade at the RU..
I may have a few too if they make it thru the winter! Maybe we can swap varieties!
