PLEASE HELP!!!FLL-YUL in Winter w/Plants?

Fort Lauderdale, FL

We're moving from Fort Lauderdale to Montreal the end of the month or beginning of December and we are taking along a 5' Bay Rum, 4 1/2' African Flame Tree, and 71/2' Washingtonia Palm. We're 50 and over so there's not going to be night driving. I don't want to freeze my plants. I intend to insultate them and have them set into a couple of pallets screwed together with holes sawed out to accommodate them. I'm also going to to put a tall box on top of them. Wasn't sure about air holes, probably not. Didn't know, but probably would even bring them into the hotel at night. Why not, what's 3 trees, when you've got 2 people, 2 cats and 2 dogs?

Does anyone know of a product that produces heat, like something you snap and it breaks a vial or something? I'm probably reaching too far here, I know. But out of all that I have to give up, I'm taking these plants with me!!

Thanks for any suggestions.

I know that's not a picture of any of the plants I'm talking about...it's one that I have to sell. Arabica Coffee. I've had it for about 3 years. Got it at the Broward County Rare Fruit & Vegetable Sale for about $40. I believe I still have the original tree tag. I got over three (3) pounds of coffee off of it this year that I roasted in the oven. Last year, only enough for a pot and a half. If it were in the ground...who knows. And it is still laden with red berries. And others ripening all the time. It's on Craig's List, Fort Lauderdale if anyone is interested. Can't guarantee how long it will last, though.

Well, I see the picture of the coffee tree didn't copy over. There is one under the "Tropicals" forum, if anyone wants to look. I really would appreciate any help as I am desperate to take at least these 3 plants with me. For the rest, Florida can sink for all I care anymore.

I came to Florida after living in Montreal almost 2 years ago. I couldn't imagine going back, specially in winter. I'll wish you a safe journey, for you and your plants.

Just a little question here: will canadian customs allow you to take your plants across the border? As far as Florida sinking for all you care anymore, we'll just have to wait, see and hope for the best. You must have your reasons. I take no umbrage in the comment.

Keep well.

greatcyber, you need to contact the CFIA to find out what the regulations are, regarding importing those plants into Canada. At the very least, you need a phytosanitary certificate.

Good luck with your new venture.

I've brought things back by car from USA with no problems. Just go to your Extention agent (call ahead for appointment) and get a phyto for your plants. Then, the day you leave FL. wash off ALL the soil and repack roots in wet peat moss or whatever, wrapped in newspaper and then in plastic bags. Actually ask the agent. You might have to have them inspected without any soil.

You shouldn't have any probs. at all. Particularlly as these are things that won't survive in a YUL winter.

Thanks very much for the info about the certificate from the extension agent. I didn't realize I had to wash off the soil. We spoke with customs and they explained that as long as it was a plant that couldn't survive if we were to put it in the ground that there shouldn't be any problem. I really do appreciate the tips. I would hate to leave absolutely everything behind, but I'm at the point where I guess I could now. We're going next Friday to rent a place (think we already found a great loft on Craig's List) and are looking to rent for about 10-15 years, so, naturally we are finding building owners to be very accommodating. I'm so excited. I just want to get there before there is serious snow to worry about driving in because it's been about 20 years since I have driven in it. I just want to get there and park my car until spring. Walking and metro. Sure sounds nice to me. And friendly people...what a nice change! Thank you.

Things have changed somewhat, since the $$ is worth more than the US$. So -thinking about your household goodies in the car with you - list all new things with sales slips if possible. The crossing here S. of Winnipeg gets totally jammed up with people coming back from shopping in USA and many things confiscated or people fined, due to people not telling the truth.

Quite an adventure for you.

I just love Craig's List.

Good luck. Keep us posted. New NAFTA made things have no duty on them but still gst & PST.

Make VERY SURE you have all the right shots/papers etc etc for livestock. I remember once when I had to leave a teenager in Niagara Falls for a couple of hours because we were camping with dogs, decided to go look at the Falls from the US side and..... dogs not allowed as no rabies papers for them. The tag (with date) didn't count. So kiddo & dogs stayed in Canada while we took visitors across to US.

I've only imported dogs as puppies by air with all the correct papers from the breeder. Can't remember what we needed.

Unless your vehicle is a Cdn vehicle, make very sure you read all the Govt. website stuff about importing a vehicle. There is a list of ones that are not allowed in. Story on CBC this am about cars being impounded(for lying about cost) or sent back as they didn't conform to Cdn. Transport. Silly things like bumpers wrong height/running lights/ stuff like that. You also have to report in to US customs so they sign off on your US vehicle before you go on to Cdn. Customs. Think there is something about faxing US customs 72 hours prior to crossing with info about exporting your US car. Of course, diff. rules apply if it is a foreign car eg toyota/VW etc etc etc.

My immigration to Canada was 39 years ago and things have changed since then; so I won't offer specifics other than to ask ahead, be really prepared. I have imported things inherited from my parents and customs really appreciate it if you are well prepared with a full list of what you have. Good luck and once you get here, Ottawa (especially the east end where I live) is only two hours from Montreal, so come visit sometime.
