Summerville SC .. Is Tonight The Night?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I'm in agony trying to decide whether or not to take cuttings of my brugs. The temps are suppose to get into the mid to lower 30's. One of my brugs, a double, which I have been waiting for a bud to bloom for the last 2 months will finally open tonight. If I take the cutting, the bud won't open.

What do you think Deb? Is tonight the night for our first frost?

Oh Golly! Don't know, but I really don't think so. Wunderground and W-bug both say 35 or 36 and there's no frost warnings that I can see. Humidity's low but the dewpoint is 37. Seems that they've been forecasting colder than it's actually gotten the past few nights. Hope they're wrong in that way again. Are you in town or out in the country?

Can you put an umbrella kind of something over the brug to protect it?

My Weather Channel desktop is showing 36 for the low for Summerville, if that helps any. I've heard tomorrow (Wednesday) night is the night to worry about a frost. I'm getting sheets, etc. ready to cover plants for then.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

There's now a freeze warning for tomorrow night, even for Summerville. Yikes.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Brrrrrrrr, 49 here this morning but it feels like 49 below. I am such a wuss, I had to turn the heat on, my nose felt like an ice cube. Tomorrow night is supposed to be cold here too. There are a few baby tropical hibiscus that will have to be protected. I hate to start bringing things indoors; my windows have that 3M film on them and plants hate that. It seems to filter the exact light rays that the plants want.

Manning, SC(Zone 8a)

44 here, at 8.35 a.m. Ugh, I hate it!!!! We're going up to the zoo and gardens in Columbia for the first time today, and when we get home, I'm pulling out all the sheets and light blankets I can find to cover plants tonight.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

When I got up it ws 39. I went on and took my cuttings. Oh well .. I've got the bud in a vase .. I doubt it will fully open. Oh wel!

When I got up this morning it was 38.Tonight is supposed to be even lower.

I started moving stuff into my new gh.I moved my citrus and some of my baby tropical hibiscus.Tonight I'll move more.I hope everything will fit into the gh.There are hoya cuttings I rooted in the spring, begonias,a few orchids,1 humongous brug etc.plus all the cuttings I plan to take today. There's nothing like leaving everything to the last minute.

It's 46 right now (warmer) in the sun.I'll wait till 12 and then start.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Pretty nippy here this morning here too. I did find out that my greenhouse thermometer is busted since it thought it was 62 for the high AND low temp yestserday. :)

I had to be at a meeting in Orangeburg all day today, so when I got home I rushed around mulching and covering. I had already brought most of the tender plants in, but had procrastinated on protecting the stuff that stays out. It was a frantic hour or so out there...in the dark! LOL!

Already below 50 so I'm thinking the forecast is probably right. Booooooo. :(

X: So sad to bring in the cuttings.
Looking forward already to spring.

Sigh . well I've had enough winter .. ready for spring! .. My yard looks like a crime scene. I spent the afternoon taking all the cuttings I could fit into my bubblers in the greenhouse. There are cut flowers and leaves all over the place.

I know that feeling all too well, X! I spent all day just spraying Safer Soap and hustling things into the greenhouse. It's a zoo in there! I can't even get down the aisles. I'll spend the next 2 weeks trying to organize the chaos I've created. Plus, I noticed a myriad of plants that need serious up-potting. That's my "January fun". The current chaos is my "November Nightmare". And I do it EVERY year! I know for a fact my IQ is above 100, so how come I keep doing it wrong, year after year???

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Well it obviously did not frost or freeze here last night. Every thing is still standing.

We got a very heavy frost. Anything not covered got zapped. I envy all of you with greenhouses!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh wow, so sorry to hear that. After I rushed around and brought some baby hibiscus and other young plants in we never got below 46. Like X siad, everything is still standing.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

we had frost this morning.... but everything seems to have taken it well so far

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Just barely tipped down to bout 33, if I can believe my hi/lo thermometer.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

You are kidding Diehard???? It only got down to 49 here. They did say the frost would only get the inland areas; you must be just the right distance "inland".

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

I'm about 1 mile inland and down the road from Diehard and we did get a frost last night. Looks like everything is doing fine though. I'm thinking about building a shed this winter, think I'll make it maybe 4 ft longer than I had planned and turn it into a small greenhouse. It wouldn't take much more effort on my part to build a small walled off room in the shed. A half wall with Ploycarbonate (sp?) panels from the half wall up to the roof would work.

The wheels are turning.

Lucky find, this looks like a good start. http://www.popularmechanics.com/home_journal/home_improvement/1276231.html

This is about what I have in mind. Looks like I have a little project tonight. I can probably just modify their plans a lot easier than starting from scratch.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Shop lights should work just as well as the polycarbonate windows and it might be easier.

CoreHHI: You're more industrious than I am.

My "greenhouse" addition this year is heavy plastic, fitted over a fence and draped over some supports, held down with a couple of bricks. Plants sitting on a plank of wood. Couple of soda bottles painted black for heat.
Ugly? Very. Crude? Yes. But - if I can believe my thermometer, it's working pretty well - so far.
May need to reevaluate when we hit temps in the 20s! LOL!

Hey ya'll, can you post some photos of your greenhouse projects, I sure would like to get my hubby thinking about it.
