at the crown plaza toady..... a bue ginger blooming! is that supposed to happen in the carolinas?

I have one and am very happy it survived this hot, dry summer. It's really starting to bloom now.
This one is actually a lot happier than mine. It actually has leaves..... ;)

They sure do, I'll drop a piece off the next time I am down your way. Interestingly, these are not true gingers but are in the tradescantia family, like the wandering jew plant which is why they root so easily. Look up Dichorisandra thyrsiflora in PlantFiles. The are late to start blooming or I suspect we would see a lot more of them around here.

I've gotten my two potted ones to bloom the last two years. But I had no idea you could put them in the ground here.

The roots on these guys are strange too. Have any of you noticed the weird water-like pouches attached to the roots? Very weird.

Not sure if they would be hardy in the midlandsor not. You might try putting one in the ground and keeping the other in your house.
I think the weird things look like potatoes. Their purpose is to store energy for the plant.
