OMG!!! That's WAY too early!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Oh yes, but all the sooner for Winter Sowing to begin!! Woo hoo! Bring on those milk jugs.

Carol - have you decided what we're going to winter sow for you?

This morning the snowflakes were huge. Thought I would put my "winter greeter" out.

Thats cute Jo.

My dog agility club gave me this gift last week - will sit on the front steps in December.

Joanne I have lots of seeds and some on order too! And a few milk jugs too. Asked a friend to save her milk jugs as there is a young child in the house and they go thru lots of milk!

My current seed list : Annual Phlox (Phlox of Sheep)
Canary Bird Vine
Red Flax ( but I might just direct seed that - does well)
Pyrethrum
Astrantia, Ruby Cloud
Aquilegia Green Apples
Candytuft, dwarf annual
Annagallis
Plus poppies and a few other things on order with Les from T&M.

Joanne, your winter greeter is adorable!

Jo and Carol, those are both adorable winter ornaments! Joanne, I too look forward to winter sowing! Sure make it less depressing to look at snow. I wonder if the annagallis will germinate early enough for wintersowing Carol-- did you try that one Joanne?

Theresa

I haven't tried it Theresa, but it's on my list. Is it one of those ones, like petunias, that might take too long? (I'm still trying petunias anyway...)

Hey, Carol, hmmm, maybe it's time to put the lawn furniture away? lol Great pic!

Touch wood - but we haven't had snow here yet, although last weekend a few flakes fell for about 5 minutes. Won't be long now. There's lots I'd like to get accomplished before it's too cold to work outside. I'm mulching and building a couple of new beds. Finished a pebble mosaic yesterday that I've been trying to accomplish for over a year because I didn't know what design to make. Ended up doing a trial-run on the shed floor and changed my mind about 3 times - but it worked out not too bad.

I've decided to scale way back on the wintersowing this year. (Yeah right!) I'm dabbling at crossing some hostas - so I need the room for them.

Your snow out West isn't here to stay yet, is it?

Sandy

Not likely to stay at least here in Calgary - it comes and goes!

Sandy actually a lot of my 'lawn' furniture stays outside all winter - the willow chairs are too heavy to move and there isnt space in the shed, the Muskoka chair wont go thru the back door, sometimes I put it in the shed and that metal/mesh chair in the pic can stay out in all weather! I do put in the old plastic ones -usually and this winter they go in because they are freshly painted and stenciled!

Joanne if any of those seeds aren't suitable just say so - I will direct seed in the spring.

Carol,
Red flax would be fine; I winter sowed it this year. Aquilegia should be fine; it self seeds like mad, right? (I actually "fall sowed" some in milk jugs this year; I did a demo of how to prepare the milk jugs for the winter sowing classes I taught, and I sowed Aquilegia in each jug).
I was planning to try that Astrantia and that Phlox myself this year too. The rest of them, no idea, but no biggy, eh? Seeds are cheap. Plus, I already have about 46 types of seeds on my winter sowing list, so I'll have lots of seedlings to share with you...

I know summer is really over here when DH stacks his toys in the garage. They are a 1965 Porsche 356C cabriolet and a 1955 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. He has rigged up a system where he drives the Porsche onto some supports, jacks it up and stores the Caddy underneath for the winter. Means we can get a 3rd car in a 2 car garage.

He did that yesterday and now my car gets to park inside. When he gets around to it, he will wall off the section with the toys and he keeps a light bulb on there for a small bit of heat.
Somewhere I have a picture, but I can't find it. Might have to take a new one.

Oh my Ann!

And he makes you park outside in an Ottawa winter? Shame!

What about a lengthwise extension on the garage so his toys all go in the back and you park in the front?

I put the flannel sheets on my bed today - another sign of winter!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thankfully Saturday was ok for outside work. Got all my containers emptied & put away for the winter. I think I went a little overboard on the number of containers...took me hours to clean them up. I dump all the soil into the flowerbeds & veggie garden. My yard seems a lot bigger now that everything is put away. Cleaned up the pation table set & forgot to cover it. Oh well, will have to wait until the chair cushions dry out from the snow & then cover it.

Ann,

I couldn't imagine a 2 tier car park in a garage. Must be some kinda strong supports.

Carol,

I was thinking to put the flannels on as well. That wind is cold.....brrr
Luv your snowman family

Carol, your outside looks like ours, at least it waited for Halloween to come and go!
Joanne, like your bear that isn't bare!
Ann , I can't believe your husband is just like mine,LOL I keep telling him that gardeners are directly related to horsepower. Stacking cars has been going on for a while but not at our house. Our toy was sold to do our house reno 3 years ago. Now my toys are in the garden along with my brain.
Winter is here but that means that spring is that much closer too.
Now I just have to live through Christmas as it seems that we don't have enough staff and I have not been getting my days off, thank goodness it's not gardening season too.

Lest the misinterpretation prevails longer, it's MY car that goes next to the toys in the garage. HIS daily car gets the driveway. But his also has an engine block heater. Mine doesn't. And he's already extended the garage as far forward as he could w/o getting a zoning variance. Actually, we built a kitchen right behind the garage 16 years ago, but forgot about 6" thick walls. The whole kitchen ended up being cantilevered a few inches north to accommodate the huge bumpers on the Caddy.

This pic isn't the one I was looking for, but it shows the Porsche ready to be jacked up last year. I'll keep looking for the other, but it might be only on my older computer.

Took new pics today. This is what they look like. I had one with MY car in the garage too, but when I went to download, found out I didn't have a card in the camera. LOL

A double-decker garage - how cool is that!
