H. darwinii

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I just received this plant in the ail yesterday. I haven't had the best of luck growing hoya darwinii in soil so I thought i'd try one that was mounted and see what happens.

This is another shot of the same plant. If you look closely in the lower left hand corner there is a set of 3 bullate leaves. They are so neat looking, they look like someone took a normal leaf and inserted a straw into it and blew it up. They even feel different. The best way i can describe how they feel is almost like a styrofoam feel to them.

this is another H. darwinii that i received from a second source, growing in soil and notice how different the leaves are on this one. I read someplace else that growing them mounted as opposed to in soil can cause the leaves to grow differently. Time will tell!!!!

David, that is too cool!! I don't do real well with mounted hoyas...Way too little moisture in the air here. Actually, I don't seem to be very successful with any mounted plants, even tillandsias.

How are your hoyas from Thailand doing? I am eager to see how your variegated archiboldiana turns out. Have they all rooted?

Your greenhouse is absolutely beautiful!! How is baby lambii doing? No new growth on my large one yet, but my regular one is trying really hard to catch up with yours. Of course, you do have several years head start - add the greenhouse growing conditions, and it truely isn't a fair race!! Heeeee!

Seeing how large your hoya leaves are on the beer fertilizer, I am wondering if the two lambiis are really different, or all the same. Especially as Gabi ordered the regular lambii from David Liddle as IML 1046, and it had almost identical measurements as my large leaf lambii IML 1800. Hmmmmmm.

Any theories out there?

Sara, all of the Thai hoyas from my first order are rooted and doing very well, including the variegated archboldiana. I received the second set of Thai hoyas last week from another source and they were packed very poorly. Of the 12 varieties that were on that shipment,10 of them were mush upon my opening the package and the other 2 are very questionable as to their survival at this point. It's a shame that they were in such poor shape when they arrived as I had some very choice hoyas on that order. Hoya pandurata being one of them and to my knowledge no one in the U.S. has that hoya.

This will be my first experience with a mounted hoya and look which one I chose to begin with. Hoya darwinii which is a B@#$% to grow anyway but we'll see how it goes!!!

Baby lambii is doing just great!!! mine is the IML 1046 clone from David Liddle and I just measured some of the new leaves today. One in particular which is still soft and not finished growing yet was 8" long X 51/2 wide, almost twice the size of the old leaves. I cant say if the 2 are the same or different since I fertilize with the beer formula and all of my hoyas have gigantic leaves!!!! I have leaves on pentaphlebia that are equal in size to the new lambii leaves.

David, did this come from Dischidia Guy? He has a post on MSN with one in bloom.

Jen it did come from him. I tried to buy the one that was in bloom but that is a personal plant of his. He had others for sale though so I chose one of those and as you can see from the pic they are all nice sized plants.

I thought of doing some of those mounted things, but with my DRY Southern Calif. air and no greenhouse....I would have to be misting that thing 8 times a day, or put it in a ziplock bag & leave it there. Ha.
Let us know how it does for you.

My main concern with this particular plant now Marcy is the fact that it has been growing in FL and now I have it in SC. Humidity is not a problem as I have plenty of that. The problem is going to be keeping it warm this winter. I heat the gh but only to around 50F.

Winters for us are fairly mild here but i'm sure this pant has become accustomed to being grown outside year round in FL in much warmer temps than it will be getting here in the winter months so i'll have to keep a close eye on it as the cooler temps could become an issue for it.

If I see there is a problem with it i'll just put it into my rooting aquarium where it'll have overhead lighting, bottom heat and a constant supply of moist air until spring.

How about just taking that one in the house & hanging it over the kitchen sink or by a bathroom window or something?
Of course a lot of my hoyas live outside in winter with 50 and even 40 degree nights so it my just be a matter of what it is used to. However, I think I would take that one in & find a window for it.

Mounted plants should do better than non mounted ones if you keep the substrate moist... they get the moisture from the substrate not the air...the air around the substrate will be moist. mount the substrate in a dish of water...gosh...
