Thought you would like to see another of my Jamine stock plants. I got this one as a tiny plant and it is now blooming for the first time. I am really enjoying this baby.
Jasminum sambac "Grand Duke of Tuscany"
what a beauty!
Berger! You are talking of my favorite Jasmine!! Don't you just love their scent? If Scheherezade had to offer a lovely plant to the king, and boasts of a scent so mystical, I'm sure that would be it.

This one plant has three blooms on it. It is one of the most beautiful blooms, sorry my ability to photograph it certainly does not do it justice. I am so thrilled to have brought it this far. It was pretty ugly when I first got it but it seems very happy here. I have a few more babies just coming into their first blooms. I will keep you updated. I want to specialize in Jasmine...when I am working with them I am absolutely in heaven. I think they know how much I love them. Yes, I talk to them and on occasion, I sing to them.
Music is on in the greenhouse as well as in the birdroom. Am I crazy or what?
So true Chrissy. I have another hedychium that beats the scent of the white ginger. But I look forward to collecting the jasmine blooms and place them in a bowl of water. Scents the whole house. Asians use them to perfume drinks and rice.
Jasmines must be in the gardenia family, perhaps?
Chrissy, tis the hedychium angustifolium peach! Regal flowers too. Never had a wiff of the olive blooms. Tried to paste and copy the link for you, but doesn't work. Look into the ginger forum and there's the Peach thread I had put up.
Sorry for this deviation Berger! FYI, there are even Malaysian songs inspired by jasmines.
I have 2 jasmines right now. One is a star jasmine and the other one is called Margerite and is a perrenial where I work so I have a young one that I am hoping will make it thru this winter. I piled it with mulch so that should help.
I really love the scents of them. And gardenia which I also have.
I have been trying to add my plants to my journal when I have time. I have most of my jasmine in there now. The oldest stock plant I have is the Maid of Orleans. It is resting now and I am about to go take some more cuttings. Here are some of its blooms. I am just learning about Jasminum and if you all see something in my journal that needs correcting, please let me know. I sometimes get the culvert , genus and species confused, so do not hesitate to correct me if necessary. Thanks.
Berger, those Maid of Orleans are very hardy stocks. I have one about 7years old!
Thanks for sharing this with us. Now to go ahead and acquire Duc Of Orleans. All my Asian gfs in Houston have them in their yards. Lucky them..they do not have to worry about overwintering them!
By the way Pepper, I was at Lowe's this morning and racked up on Star Jasmine. They were selling for $2 per quart. Poor DH will have to construct a special four trellis for me!
lol. I have to get a trellis made for the hardy jasmine this winter. The non hardy one wrapped around itself so I don't have to worry about that one this year. Next year I will have it grow on the deck railings.
Where did my mind go?? I meant to say Duc of Tuscany!!
Coming back to the scent, when we were in Cairo, Egypt, a taxi had its' dashboard covered with jasmine, Maid of Orleans variety. How the drive that night was the most lovely. We were so taken away by its' fragrance.
If anyone wanted a perfumed garden, one should start with jasmine.
I purchased a Night Blooming Jasmine a few weeks ago from a garden center. I do not usually do that because I am afraid of disease. Well, it has mealy bug and yesterday I noticed it. I immediately took it outside hosed it down and sprayed it. I used alcohol on the cuttings I took and hopefully I nipped it in the bud. I will be just like a maniac if it has already spread to other plants in the greenhouse. That is one insect or whatever the H it is, that makes me crazy. I hate it and it seems to spread no matter what. I wish I knew what causes it. I am now on 24 hour watch for those little white @#^&$*)_/.
LOLOL!!! That's funny. ALL gardeners are very compassionate folks...unless a critter is seen!! I am the same way, and I don't use no chemicals. That's hard ain't it?
Well, someone suggested using a garlic wash. Just boil some cloves of garlic, let it cool, then spray. I had not tried this yet, but certainly if I find any bugs in the gh..due to my new acquisition....watch out!
LOL,
Night Jasmine is a mealy magnet.
I have had good luck with regular intravels of foliar spraying the entire garden every 2 weeks with Seaweed extract. I stopped sometime in September, and the troops are moving in..so had to break out the seaweed this morning.
It's funny, because I was pressure washing the green house roof today and I fantasized about pressure washing the little buggars off the leaves. I'm sure it would mess up the plants, but I can tell ya it sure looked good in the day dream!
Rj
LOL!! I always think about using the pressure washer on those nasty bugs too!! I am gonna try coffee and tea to start to keep bugs at bay. After that I will have to get more inventive.
I di d a mealy bug check this morning and found nothing. Doesn't mean they did not see me coming and were hiding, but I bought a natural spray yesterday and as soon as it stops raining I am going to take it outside again and wash and spray it with this natural spray.
I can not use chemicals because I am too careless and I have had a nasty reaction to one fungicide I sprayed one time. I actually after about four hours later was really confused and felt completely out of control. Kids gave me holy H. That scared me so I am really not into chemicals. My SIL has his license because he is a VP at a large nursery here in NJ and I told him if there is any spraying with anything strong, he must do it. He agreed that would be fine. :)
Gee, and here I am thinking my MIL is making up her allergies! She's alo allergic to gas fumes.
Yes, don't want to lose control of your mind just to get rid of unnecessary weevils. At least you are getting help.
There's this book by Jerry Baker that offers a lot of natural solutions. Have you heard of it?
~Jaye
No Heaven, I would like to have the title if you have it. I need to be careful.
It's called "Giant Book of Garden Solutions". Jerry Baker is a televised Master Gardener, I think, on PBS.
Forget to include his web address

Thank you so much I will look at Barnes and Nobel today if it is not on his website.
Wow! You are certainly a Jasmine connoisseur! You must be immersed in their fragrance all the time. The "taitensa" leaves are beautiful!
Heaven, that is the most unusual thing about the plant. It has more leaves and only one bloom. The bloom comes up in the center of the plant. I am wondering if that is all there is to it. I was hoping for something more, but it is a very pretty plant and when it blooms it is worth waiting for.
JB, I looked it up and this is what I found. Be patient, you might have the biggest jasmine/gardenia ever!

Hi Heaven, thanks for the link. What a great new place to play. I can spend more time just looking and dreaming.
HOLY MOLY! I may have to build my "T" gardenia it's own greenhouse. Isn't that funny? It was so little when I bought it and now it is about 18" tall. All leaves and one flower. I just love surprises and when I see a plant I think may be fun, I buy it when it is tiny. Then I wait and see what happens. We will definitely watch this jolly giant. I may be the next Jack in the Jasmine/Gardenia stalk! What do you think of that????
Hehehe!!! At least you'd be on a scented climb!!
Come spring, I'll be getting a special jasmine fromToptropicals and my gf in Houston promises some Duc of Tuscany cuttings. Right now, my provincial gh lacks room and moreover, I must try to start quilting!!
So...thank you for rekindling my love for jasmines. Actually I started 'collecting' Maid of Orleans, because it's my late mother's fav. flower.
Keep posting pics on your lucky find. I can practically smell it across the screen.
Thanks JB
I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Heaven. The next few days are going to be crazy. I have so many fake wreaths to make because we open a week early and the live ones will die before Christmas. The weather was so bad this year the trees just will not keep their needles on too long. God Help the poor people who have to buy shipped trees. I will not attempt to make live ones until December. I also have all my jasmine to transplant into larger pots. The are up to 6 " pots now and I am noping they do not go higher than 8". I am not sure how much to charge wholesale for them. Any ideas. They are the Maid of Orleans. I bought it retail years ago for $11.95. Is there someplace you know of that helps people price their stuff? The pots and soil should be included if you really want to recover your expenses. I buy them by the case but they are still an expense you have to have. How do you price your plants for sale?
JB, selling plants is one that I had not ventured into. But this is something I found online. Like everything else, your profit should make all your efforts worthwile. Hope this helps.
Price your plants realistically. Before setting a price, total your upkeep, such as the original cost of seed, cuttings, plants, tubers, or bulbs; your pots and potting material; and an approximately proportional share of heat, light, and water, fertilizer, insecticides, and greenhouse deterioration.
Take into consideration, too, the customers you will serve. If you are offering a general, popular selection of plants and you aim to capture the trade of the home town folks, you may have to meet local competitive prices. Also, because your venture is new (as is your reputation), your merchandise will have to be as good as and preferably better than plant items available elsewhere in town.
Thank you Heaven...I am going to sell wholesale only. I do not want to have hours and have to keep a shop open. Been there done that. It puts me back into a schedule and I am not going to do that or I will never be retired. LOL I will be selling to two roadside stands that have greenhouses and have ask me if I would sell to them. Both are nice young families trying to make it. Here in NJ survival is top priority. I will take into consideration all you mentioned and I appreciate your help. It reaffirmed what I was thinking. But, after looking up the wholesale prices on the internet yesterday I was shocked to see what prices they ask and some of the plants I have they do not have, so this may be a hit and miss thing this first year. I have until Spring to come up with a price. These plants get repotted about three or four times before they will be sold and I reuse the pots of course after I bleach and clean them, but I had to purchase three new sizes. The secret to good healthy roots is not to have them grow into a big pot too fast. Move up slowly just a size at a time, depending on the growth of the cuttings. Believe me it works. But it is more time and cost consuming. Thanks again for your help. Keep in touch, please.
