silkie
i got sizzles!!!
CONGRATULATIONS! That is soooooo awesome. I got an incubator and hopefully soon I'll have some Sizzle eggs to hatch. Can't wait to see pics.
What's a sizzle? Is that a silkie frizzel cross? I can only imagune what that would look like.
one hatched a blueish/silver color never seen that color before. i think it is a splash but not sure cause my splash hatch out different color than that so i pm'd the breeder to ask. i'm excited to find out what color it is. one just hatched a few min ago not sure color yet. looks like a dark one so blue or black i'm guessing. one salmon hatched so far too. i'll definately take pics! kool, you'll love them!!!
silkie
lol, it's a silkie x frizzle cochin. they are awesome!!!
OOOOOOOOOh I can't wait to see pic's Silkie. Okay need an update how many baby Sizzle's do ya have?
I'm so excited to get my sizzle eggs now.
OMG!!! jaynie said she has not hatched one of her own splash she has been trying to for awhile i guess. i got 2 splash hatched!!! she is gonna smack me when she finds out she only knows about the first one, lol.
all together i got 6 out of 11 eggs i put in the hatcher. some are late hatching but i woke up to 2 this am so they are still comeing. i got total so far 1-blue, 1-black, 2-splash, 1-buff, and 1-partriage. i got a gorgous rainbow of colors, rotfl!!! they are all healthy little chubba's. excellent long fluff on them. gorgous long fluff completely down the legs and middle toes even some on the back toes which ya never see with great toe spaceing and all. very nice dark skinned too. the bearded ones are sooo cute!!!!
i am in awe over these cuties!!! i have never gotten silkie chicks this quality from anyone before from hatching eggs, i'm still in shock. come spring i am definately getting more eggs to hatch!!! i gotta charge my batteries and hopefully can get lots of pics to fill a disk so i can go get them done to bring back here to upload.
Greetings all!
I am so excited to find this page and to find others who are into "funky" chickens like me. I "inherited" my poultry two years ago when I bought my property and became interested in crossing silkies with frizzles about one year ago. I have two nes batches of chicks right now and have high hopes of two or three of them having silkie type feathers that are going to curl. They are all blacks and blues. I am looking for a blue splash silkie rooster to expand that color range. I have LOTS of questions but for now, just really happy to find you all!!
Thanks for being here!
hmm... well last one hatched it is a strawbery blonde looking one with race stripes. the one i thought was partriage is a ginger/red brown looking one with a big ginger stripe down it. haha she doesn't have a partriage breeder so i'm excited to figure out what hatched, rotfl. so total i got 7 gorgous babies!!! the last 4 internal piped i was so heartbroken. 2 splash and 2 buff is what they apeared to be poor little cuties. i hate when that happens.
funky chickens ROCK!!
so glad you joined us!!! if you don't find one by spring i should have splash eggs then. here is a pic of one of my splashes it's a bearded showgirl my only sg that color, it's about 4mths old now i need new pics, lol. i still don't know sex of it yet. it will be one of my breeders come spring and the others i have are silkies. if 2 of these are splash too i'll have 2 sizzles to add to that mix, lol.
what all kinds of chickens do you raise? do you have other frizzles besides silkies? ya got questions ask away that's what we're here for to help out. :0)
silkie
Oh Silkie sorry you lost some. : (
Sounds like you got 7 beauties. Can't wait to see those pics.
Sarah, so glad you found this forum and were practically neighbors. : )
Congrats Silkie! That pic is too cute! Can't wait to see the rest of them.
Welcome Sarah!
this is some of my brooder babies. the black and blue one are 2 of my new sizzles and so is the blueish yellow one almost straight back in the center. the ginger red colored one is also. the others are white silkie babies from my exhabition whites and the really yellow ones are salmon favorroles i got them in as hatching eggs also from someone else.
Thanks for the welcome everyone. I used to have red, black & white frizzles but lost all but one black to a rampaging dog I was fostering last spring, a week after I brought it on the property and thought we were safe. Lost 15 birds all together including half my Aracanas. I bought a blue frizzle rooster from PA and have two silkies left from a batch I shipped in. The blue hen is just starting to lay and the black turned into a rooster that I want to replace with the blue splash silkie. I have black, white & blue splash cochin hens with my blue frizzle rooster so, I keep hoping for splash frizzles.
In my second generation birds I have two smooth crosses with top knots, really dk blue and 4 sizzles, one blue & 3 blacks. I have my first "third generation" batch of 11 chicks from my two flocks. All are black or blue, have five toes and are now about 4 wks. I have at least one who appears to be silkie feather type with curl & top knot. Have 4 total curling at this point. My second batch of 9 is just starting to feather up at 2 wks and looks like maybe 5 in that batch will curl. I still have two hens setting and a batch of 8 eggs I'm considering putting in the incubator.
I also have three Red Bourbon turkeys, 6 aracanas and 4 generic ducks who lay religiously. Love duck eggs for baking!!!
Will try to get pic up next weekend.
Let me know if you know anyone with a blue splash silkie and ..fyi...I will not be keeping most of my boys or this black silkie rooster if anyone is interested.
What is the consecensus on the feather type? Is anyone getting the silkie feather with curls? I haven't seen them anywharer but...I just found you all so....???
Thanks again!
Love the pics! Those chicks are adorable!
I know what you mean about baking with duck eggs! My meatballs come out sooo good! Most people around here wrinkle up their noses when I tell them I bake brownies, cookies, ect with the duck eggs. Oh well, they don't know what they are missing! oh, and the omelets..mmmmm!
Oh baby chick pics. They are so cute. And that splash showgirl is a beautiful. Thanks for posting pics.
here is the site i ordered the eggs from. knightschicks.com. jaynie is a sweetheart and a great breeder. if you go to her site there is pics under sizzle that show her sizzle breeders. it explains the frizzle gene some and how it works.
hope that helps,
silkie
Hey Silkiechick........ how are the Sizzle chicks doing? Any updated pics?
they are doing great and so adorable!! i will have to take pics again but only about half of the wings are frizzled or in so far.
this is what they ended up all look like silkies overall but- yellow i thought was a buff is a white with barbed feathers so it has no silkie looking feathers it looks like cochin smooth feathers it is a freak silkie, lol. it is so kool to see a silkie with normal feathering i have never seen one like that.
the blue and black look like a regular silkie feathering so they are smooths so these first 3 although not frizzle looking still carry the gene to pass to the next generation.
the strawberry blonde is a frizzled with cochin feathering looks like a buff/peach cuckoo barring.
there is a dark partriage one frizzled with silkie feathering it was the ginger red colored one.
and 2 splash frizzled one has silkie feathers the other has cochin type featers
Oh, how great to hear that the babies are doing great. Oh they sound soooooo cute!
OK... dumb question # 27 ....from what I have read ...a Cocin type feather frizzeled in a silkie frizzel cross with the silkie characteristics..ie 5 toes, top knot, blue skin...would be called a sizzle...yes? So ... would not a silkie frizzle cross with the same characteristics with the silkie type coat frizzled be a Frilkie? I have both and I'm just wondering?
i'm confused how ya wrote that, lol sorry blonde moment on my part please forgive me. if i'm understanding it right you have 2 frizzled silkies one with cochin(barbed feathers) and one with silkie feathers? am i right that is what ya said? if so the cochin feathered one is the sizzle the one with the silkie feathering is called a frizzled silkie. i have both but then i have both in smooths also. i can't find the paper that came with them that said what the others are called but they still carry the frizzle gene also although it does not show so their babies will be frizzled also.
silkie
you'll have to forgive all the babies in the back ground these are brooder shots i just took. these are all my babies i'm wintering inside till they are big enough to go out.
here is a pic of a partridge sizzle and the splash frizzled silkie. this splash differs as it is frizzled but still has the silkie feathering. the first one is frizzled with barbed feathers.
the white one came out smooth sizzle, i think it is awesome to see a silkie with normal feathers. this is the only silkie in my life i have seen with smooth and barbed feathers!!
edited to add the black and blue look like normal silkies but carry the frizzle gene.
hope you enjoy the pics of my babies!!

Wow, Silkechick those are some beautiful chicks.
I got eggs from Jaymie too. They have been in the incubator 8 days now. We candled last night and there were only three out of 11 that we could see veining and movement. We will recandle again in a few days.
On another note.....I was at a yard sale a couple weeks ago and found a brand new still in box Hova Bater and egg turner. I got them both for 15.00 dollars. That totally made my day.
wow talk about lucky, you got a steal!!! awesome i can't wait to see ur babies too!!!! jaynie sent 12 eggs and 11 went into the hatcher and i got 7 beautiful babies. they will be a big part of my breeding projects this comeing year and i can't wait to see how they look all grown up and their babies after i put them with their mates. it will be awesome to see what they throw!!!
I'm so glad that you told me about Jaynie. She has been wonderful.
I'm really looking forward to hatch day (Dec 26).
I still can't believe finding that Hova Bater. Wish I could be lucky like that all the time.
I agree can't wait to see all the great chicks you will have.
Finally got some pics to show! These are my 3G (third generation) chicks from 4 months to 3 wks, 23 all together. Mostly black & blues except for three that have red on them. They range from pretty to pretty strange looking and I probably won't keep them for breeding. The pic is of the one I think comes the closest to decent Sizzle. I also have one with fairly curly silkie type feathers. Maybe they should be called Frilkies ??
sarahssizzles, he looks like he's crossed with a hawk or an eagle. Pretty color.
Sarah.......I just love the hairdo on the first one. The last two have some really neat coloring.
I would REALLY like to get some splash silkies but have had no luck with anyone. Can someone please suggest a source?
If anyone is interested in the smooth sizzle with the red markings (Pic above), I'd rather give him to a fancier then take him to the feed store.
wow you got cuties too!! that one i have no clue where he get's his color, it looks actual gold colored that is neat. i have never seen that even in golden laced colored birds before.
ask me come spring if i have splash eggs or chicks available to trade. if you are interested alot of times i trade for eggs or plants and garden things. i'm not for sure what i'm going to do with that color yet or how i'm working to breed them next year but i have splash in -silkies, sizzles and showgirls. almost all should be breeding or laying around then if not before since most are older. i have bearded and non-bearded.
silkie
Thanks silkiechick for the comliment and for all the information. I didn't know what all I had till you started explaining!!!
Looks like the red headed silkie (call her Lucy) is going to be a frizzled silkie & a hen, also a hen the very oddly red marked smooth one. I'd love to do a trade in the spring. I wanted to hang on to them ...just to see how they turn out but, have no plans to breed them & would much rather you have them then taking them to the feed store.
I have a batch of chicks coming in right now that I have 3 splash babies in & at least one, if not all, may be frizzled..woohoo!
Sarah
