Baby Yucca Plants For Seeds

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

I have some baby Yucca, "Adam's Needle" plants that I dug up and since it's getting too cold to be planting anything in my zone I was wondering if anyone would be interested in sending me seeds for them? I'm not hard to please, nearly anything that is a perennial in zone 5 would make me happy. I do have a tradelist set up so you can take a peek at that too, but you can offer anything you like. I'm sure we can work something out. My tradelist is more to give ideas of what I like than specific plants that I'm looking for.

When I ship out the Yucca they will be shipped bare root. I've not decided yet if I'm going to do the wet paper towel or not. Freezing is my main concern. From experience I know they are very tough plants and can go long periods without water. I may soak them well now and ship them dry. Once they arrive another soaking will perk them up, if they need perking at all. lol!

So, any takers?

Are yours the variegated or solid green?

Hello!!!! Sent you a dmail...

Sequee, sorry not variegate, just solid green.

JanLynn, will be replying to your d-mail.

Thanks!

Do you think they would survive the cold of the mail trucks?
If so-I would love to do this-but I am in zone 4b and have already lost 5 plants that were traded to me. They were DOA from the cold truck. Just wondering.

Would anyone know if wrapping bubble wrap around plants would help insulate them from the cold?

(WINTER+COLD+SNOW= UGHHHHHH!!!)

I've got some (final) trades that I'm going to be sending out this weekend. I've got some "raggedy" towels that I can also wrap around the plants/cuttings so, I am gonna try that and I guess that'll be it for trading for the year :(

Robbi---what kind of plants did you lose (if you don't mind me asking...)?

I lost wandering jew, a polka dotted house plant, and one other houseplant and 2 plants I have yet to figure out-they came with no label and no return address. I am still trying to nurse them but it doesn't look good.

It is just so sad to lose them before I can kill them myself-LOLOL

I'm wondering what kind of plants you lost too Robbi?

I just checked out weather.com here http://www.weather.com/maps/activity/fitness/usforecastwednesdaylow_large.html?clip=undefined®ion=undefined&collection=localwxforecast&presname=undefined
and it looks to be the coldest on Wed. night, dropping into the teens on the route between you and me Robbi.

PlantFiles say the Yucca can take temps down to -30*F. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1752/ But, of course, that's in the ground and not with a wet towel wrapped around it (if anyone thinks that's necessary for these, I have them soaking right now). I'm willing to try this if you are. If they show up DOA I wouldn't expect anything in trade, but I would need to cover the cost of postage.

Let me know what you think.

LOL Robbi. We xposted. House plants would be pretty tender I'd think, so probably the first to get nipped by cold. Wandering Jew is only tolerant of temps down to 20*. If mine survives this winter indoors I can send you some in the spring. Wish me luck on that, for both of us! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/596/

Just out of curiosity I looked up heat packs for shipping, and this is what I found. This doesn't seem outrageous to me.

I was looking at the 60 and 72 hour heat packs. I just did a google search for *heat packs for shipping* and got quite a few results. These were the best prices I found.

It's just an idea, and not such an odd one at that. I thought these would be much more expensive.

heatherjoy-if you want to give it a go-I am willing-its not like I only have a few seeds-LOL
Have a look at my list and tell me what you would like in trade. I would love to do it then...they seem pretty hardy so I am sure thet will be fine with extra newspaper. Robbi

Ok Robbi, I'll look over your list and then send you a d-mail. I'm on the way to an appt. here in a minute so it'll be later today. Thanks!

Just for the record, I'm thinking of getting some of those heat packs. I'll let y'all know if I do and how they work out.

sounds great-can't wait to hear how they work :o) Sending plants all year-KEWL!
