I am new to this, but when is the best time to take cuttings aand root them ?

Not right now. In the absence of Dusty, if someone has a Farmer's Almanac nearby, perhaps s/he could chime in. I'm at work, but I'll try to remember to bring it up here tomorrow. Right now it's better to be cultivating and destroying as the moon is waning in Virgo.

I remembered to bring it! See, it DOES happen sometimes.

The moon is now in Libra, which is a semi-productive and moist sign. However, the moon is waning, which is better for destruction than growth. If you can wait until Saturday, the moon will be waxing (it's new on Friday but I've read somewhere it's best not to do any particular gardening when it's either new or full) and it will be in Scorpio, which is another productive, moist sign, and good for transplanting, especially vines. Sunday comes Sagittarius, which is barren and better for harvesting and cultivating, though it's a good time to plant onions.

The next best time would be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Nov. 13 - 15) when it's in Capricorn. That's best for planting potatoes and roots, and excellent for pruning things to get them growing. So -- I guess the middle of next week is when I should prune those roses.

Next full moon is on the 24th.
