Well I ordered egg cartons. LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I finally did it. I finally ordered egg cartons. I know they will slow down as it cools off but we are getting ten dozen or more eggs per week. I sold four dozen to a neighbor early in the week and this is just a few days worth.

That is my single blue egg on the left. :(

Overflow! One bowl full and a second bowl started. This is after my hubby made eggs for three this morning. :) They were served fried, with cheese and mayonnaise, on bagels. yum yum!

Even with a family of 8, we are not keeping up with the hens! I made 3 dozen eggs worth of egg salad on Monday, sold four dozen, baked 2 batches of sugar cookies for school, had scrambled eggs twice this week and breakfast this morning and still the eggs are coming!

WOW------just wanted to say, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one in the world that likes a fried egg and cheese w/mayo sandwich. Runny yolks are best----

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Yeah, we love egg n cheesies! LOL Usually hubby will throw a slice of bologna or some other fried lunch meat on there. He didn't notice we had bologna this morning. Nothing like a cholesterol sammie to kick off the day!

Badseed, I have only about 25 laying hens .... but 13 of them are Ameraucanas (1 is a mutt). Soooooooooo .... when mine are laying ....... I get roughly 50% blue and 50% brown. I really like the colored eggs and really when I count our brown eggs half of them are dark brown from my 5 Welsumer hens and the other half are light brown. I'd like to have a couple Danish Brown Leghorns. They are so pretty and lay such enormous white eggs.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

At some point, I thought 2 of my birds were light brown leghorns but I keep forgetting to look them up! A person here that raises birds told me that breed often turns mean or attacks eggs and now I don't remember what she said, just that she said to keep an eye on them. Ever heard of that?

We get about 1/3 white eggs and 2/3 brown eggs. I'm waiting to see how much and if/when that changes as we have several white leghorns. I hear they are the queens of egg laying?

I do still have two of the darker birds I believe to be Ameraucana. They've not laid eggs yet or they are laying brown or white eggs. LOL The one blue egg I did get was from the Araucana and it was her first egg. All of my birds are the same age.

Shenandoah Valley, VA

I have two brown leghorns and they aren't mean at all but they are a little more skittish than the others. And fast. If you ever need to catch one better have on your racing shoes. LOL

They are steady layers but their eggs are fairly small so far. The white leghorns lay much bigger eggs, at least from what I've seen.

They're really pretty chickens but one of them is rumpless. She has tail feathers but only two and they stick straight down. Her name is Kiwi because that's what she looks like. (Sorry about the lack of focus on this picture but she flits around so much it's impossible to get a good picture of her.)

Thank you Hart. If that thing slows down, can you get a better picture? LOL I do indeed think I have two of those!

I can't remember but I don't think this is the pic of one of them. I don't think I ever figured out what this one is. It is striped on the neck, sort of penciled on the breast then barred on the rest! This pic is from July and they've changed some but mostly combs and such.

Well, little Cheetah, our Golden Campine is no longer a virgin. LOL I was out in the pen handling all the birds and showing my husband the duplicates and pointing out certain things when I noticed Cheetah had a drop of blood on her rump and the others were lightly pecking her. We put her by herself in a smaller cage for a few minutes to see what she was doing. That's when I saw the white spot. I called my three year old over to watch. What fun! I guess that was her first egg! We wiped her, made sure there was no more blood and put her back.

I also just sold another dozen eggs. When asked, I said the price was $2. From what I've been reading, that is reasonable and maybe even low? At first she was going to pass then she bought them. I told her they were $3 at the grocery. She did say the fresh ones taste better and I told her the best part is knowing what they've been fed, that they are outside all the time and that I know they are chemical free. It kills me to ask for money but I know I can't give them away either. Should I have charged less if she brought her own container?? No wonder I'm not rich. LOL

Shenandoah Valley, VA

I don't think that's a brown leghorn, Badseed. This is Kiwi's sister, Emu, on the far right. She has a normal tail. They were younger in this picture but the coloring was the same.

When I'm getting too many eggs I scramble them and feed them either to the dogs or back to the birds

Bad $2 is a great price . !! I know i pay almost $3 for the our local farmer down the road. Or i guess i m getting ripped off cuz he know 's i m a city girl lololol and he thinks it s funny. " hey lets mark up our prices to the city girl " ahhaha :) he is a funny farmer anyhow, no pun intended lol :)
does anyone do pickled eggs ?
sue

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks Sue! It's always been hard for me to ask for money, well, maybe not when I was younger. LOL Seriously, I know a lot of people here just don't have it. I did find out the lady down the road was only selling them for $1.25 and had just raised that from $1. I know there are people on here that said $1.50 was too low.

I boxed up 6 dozen yesterday. They sure look pretty in those clear cartons. Looks like I'm planning for Easter though. ;)

I've never pickled eggs. I'm not even sure if I've ever eaten them!

do you have any restaurants around that might be ineterested ?
i have never tried pickeled eggs either but my FIl loves them. So i ask around.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

There actually is a little diner down in town. Between their restaurant garden and home garden, they about wiped me out of vegetable plants in the spring. LOL I told them I'd grow whatever they wanted for them in the spring.

We were in there a few weeks ago and I asked the waitress where they got their eggs. She said locally. I said okay and told her we are getting about a dozen and a half a week. She said she was sure they'd take them if I was giving them away. Uhhhh...think they'd feed us for free as a trade? LOL

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Chelle
they probably buy them by the case...at a very low price

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm not sure. They had a ton of styro egg cartons in the kitchen in a rainbow of colors.

ahhaha Yeah like NOT
funny how people take things as long as they are free. Maybe you could get a discount ? :) take 3 doz eggs and give me 2 free meals :)

Badseed,

I suggest trying to sell to the high-end B&B's in your locality. Some B&B proprietors are into fresh and pretty. You might be able to sell your dark brown & green/blue pastel eggs to someone who prepares soft boiled eggs for clients using egg stands. I've seen some really nice egg stands in jadeite selling for close to $30 each. I've never wanted them that much. My wife sells milk glass and jadeite restaurant ware that was mfgd in Hocking County, OH back in the 40's-60's. You'd pee your pants if you knew how much she sold a white coffee mug for... 10 times more than what I paid.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Now you have me wanting to research jadeite restaurant ware. LOL I'll have to look around for B&Bs! I'm sure there are some near here. The actual town is really quite small-you know, a "one light town"! Now if I can get them to decorate with my plants, serve my eggs and employ my kids, that might be something. ;)

We do have two little antique shops and a man that sells vintage motorcycle parts, 2 taverns, 2 little restaurants, a home decorating place... I really should get out more!

or you could take up the fine art of Russian egg decorating ? :) you know the ones that are in museums and sell for the low cost of $10,000 lol
Hey i think i remeber Country Woman mag doing an egg decorating story. I will see if i can find it.
your town sounds like mine. One light and one horse. I think our postal person and the mayor are the same person. lol

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I've actually been blowing out eggs! LOL I think the Faberge thing is way beyond me! I did find some websites that sell the tiny jewelry boxes, gold goodies, egg stands, you name! They had blown egg shells as well!

We don't actually live *in* town. It's about 3 miles away. The do also have a convenience store and a dollar store but they roll up the streets really early!

Moxee, WA(Zone 4a)

Badseed,

I bought 7 of those extra heavy white mugs for about $50 each + shipping over the last 6 years. The jadeite coffee mugs are selling for 10-20% of the price of the white (white is scarce). They are not so cool in the USA ..... but in the Far East ...... American vintage goods are hot items for the wealthy with disposable income.

I'm in a similar locality but also10 miles from a city of 75k population.

were not even classifeid as a city or a town. St Paris is a village !!! hahha of only 2,000
I love it . The next town we 're moving to is even smaller ! Thank God i m a countyry girl yah haaaa
I have seen milk glass around , i htink i saw it on Martha Stewart. Found a bunch at a garage sale . candy dish , a small vase and a large round bowl.

Woodsville, NH

I live in the smallest place, Woodsville is a village too, about 0.9 miles big, a pop of apprx 1100. We have our own high school, Lights and Water Co, fire station. Everything I need is within 2 miles of my home but you cannot see anything from my home but a great view of Mts and fields

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

BAD Seed do you have any Food Lion Stores close to you?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hey phicks! I don't think we have any of those.

Hubby just brought me in another 1/2 dozen eggs. LOL I have six dozen in cartons and three butter bowls full.

This has prompted me to search the internet looking at signs for the yard for eggs and my other endeavors. I think I've come up with the post design I want and need to head to the garage for wood and paint. I'm sure I can do my own pretty cheap!

Photographer, thanks for turning me on to the Jadeite/Jadite! I've been looking at it on Ebay and just general searches. Those ladies heads mugs, figurines keep popping up. My grandma had a few of those. I'm wondering where those are! Also my elders had a lot of those other pieces. Looking around has brought up lots of fond memories. :)

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

Bad Just go to one of the Super Market that has those Recycle Boxes in front of the Store You can get all the Egg Cartons You Want Free

Moxee, WA(Zone 4a)

Badseed, The pressed formed glass in jadeite, delphite, custard, white colors were mfgd by among others ..... Jeannette, McKee, Fire-King, Martinsville, Hazel-Atlas, Pyrex, Hocking ... that bought Fire-King. The glass household products dating from the 1920's to the 1970's have all become collectables. My wife has several curios full of mostly restaurant ware; etc. A few years back Martha Stewart was cooing about restaurant ware on her show and it was highly visible in the background of her cooking area. As a result .... the prices skyrocketed. I can hardly believe (but I am delighted) that my wife sold 2 mugs to a Japanese Executive and banked $300 ; plus paid for all of the mugs we've ever purchased. The rich Japanese have been consuming the lion's share of collectable art in several forms for more than a few decades. Kelly

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you for that lesson! Oh how I wish I had some to sell. ;)

While I was doing some looking around, I was also looking at some "Made in Occupied Japan" pieces and started looking at different markings for various glassware. There are just way too many excuses to sit at the computer. LOL

Moxee, WA(Zone 4a)

Badseed, My wife has 1-2 glass & vintage jewelry pieces from the Made in Occupied Japan period. Funny that most of that stuff went out of Japan. Now the Japanese are buying them from Americans and paying 200-300 times their original prices. Many of the pieces from that period in Japan are highly sought after. I can think of the sterling silver items made by Meiji artisans that were featured on the Antique Roadshow. The valuations are mind boggling .... enough to make one envious. We have nothing from Japan worth mentioning but there is always the possibility .... down the road. Americans collect Japanese art .... just like Japanese collect Americana.

morehead, KY(Zone 6a)

Hello! all
I sell on ebay and do sell a lot of jadeite, fire king, ruby glass, depression glass etc. I do not do as well with the Japanese items, but still make enough to make it worth my time. I buy most of my stuff from Goodwills and storage unit auctions. One item I do sell a lot of and make great profit from is plus size clothes. I still get funny looks when i buy them, but I could care less.

George
P.S. When i sold eggs, I charged .25 cents less if customer brought their own carton.

Bad you need to go on Antique Road Show lol :)
Leave it to Marthat to make things to expensive to collect :) but great if you sell. How fun your wife made out like a bandit on her mugs Photographer.
I talked with a farmer who asked me what kind of trees are in my woods . I replied Oak , he told me Europeans and Japanese pay big money for chickens and pork who are feed acorns . Man i got acorns comming out of my ears.
Bad feed your chickens acorns !!!! I will send you some of mine .
