I want to congratulate Mark and everyone involved for putting out a fantastic issue of Stemma. It contains so much useful information it should be put on some kind of sticky thread. If you can't figure out a way to root your Hoyas after reading this issue, it is time to get out of Hoyas. Great issue!
Doug
Stemma V.1, Number 4
I totally agree Doug, it was a fantastic issue, I printed out every page so that I could have it handy for future reference on rooting techniques!!
~Brenda
Same feeling here, was just loaded with useful information--I saved it. Thank you all who were involved.
I like to print the whole thing out too. Then I can just take it to bed with me for some "pillow reading". I even use the hole punch and save all the Stemma issues in a binder. Or one could use the folder type portfolio notbooks that the school kids have all over the place. Ha.
It makes a great way to have all that info. organized and handy.
Great job again Mark! Thanks for making it all happen.
Marcy
Thanks Doug! And thanks Marcy and Brenda and everyone else who made it happen, almost all of whom are members here.
Someday, maybe soon, someone is going to invent some kind of computer screen that is lightweight and looks like a book, that you can carry around into bed or the bath and is easy on the eyes. I for one can't wait.
Mark
I am so glad you started this thread Hoya24!! I had totally missed my Stemma e-mail. I remember seeing the email Stemma Volume 1 # 4 - but didn't have time to open it and totally forgot about it. I've now gone back and found it and am printing all 53 pages so when I get finished with my baking today I can sit down and read it! I think I must have missed back issues! Maybe I should take one day and go back through all email to see if I can find any!
I have a file box that I have for plant info and this will stay under H with other Hoya info!
Thanks again Mark, for another great issue. Also thanks to all the contributers who are familiar names on this forum. I print out all the issues and save them in a binder also. Makes an excellent
reference manual. Sometimes it's easier to pull out a book, than to go on the internet.
Thanks again to all of you for your helpful info.
Eileen
I don't know anything about Stemma. Could someone tell me where to go to sign up?
Thanks so very much Mark!
There is such a wealth of great info in this issue. I have it printed and have read it but I am sure to dog ear it and reread it many times. Lots of great tips we could all use.
Thanks also to all the authors for taking the time to put your wonderful skills onto paper. I can see a huge baby boom that is a hoya baby boom coming up. And it happened with the lights on:)
Thanks
Bea

Thanks, Lin............
working on your package as we speak!
Betty and I are headed back up to Seguin for more hoyas on Tuesday (LOL)
I am sending what is on the front porch as of now. I still have 5 out at Helen's nursery here that I will be forwarding as soon as I get back!
I'd like to say here, since there have been many requests, that I don't as a practice send out back issues of Stemma myself. I would like to encourage a sense of community, and so would much rather see subscribers sharing back issues. It is quite easy- just attach the issue in question to an e-mail and send it off.
So anybody desiring past issues should just post a message here or on one of the other forums- I'm sure you will have many offers.
Mark
I got the current issue, but would love copies of any past issues if possible!
My home e-address is:
povsbury@cfl.rr.com
Thanks in advance to whoever can spare copies via email!
Lin I can send you Vol 1 #3 and then maybe others have the ones before that....
~Brenda
Thank you Brenda! Much Appreciated!
Guess I'm one of those that bombarded Markroy for the Stemma before reading he doesn't do that. ( ..Please accept my apology Markroy : ) Is it just emailed documents? Or what am I dealing with here? Please excuse any stupidity on my part!....
No stupidity involved! And no need for apology. I just want people to share the old issues. A good way to make friends, no?
The issues are pdf's (portable data file- I think?) and can be added to emails as attachments very simply. Just pick the "attach files" feature from your email account when writing an e-mail, then select to attach the issue of Stemma from your desktop (or wherever it is). Very easy to send and download. Voila!
Mark
Thank you Mark!
I have all four issues of Stemma on my computer. If anyone needs one or all of them, just email me at:
ima_digger@Yahoo.com, and I'll send them to you.
Great issue, Mark et al. I especially liked the article on SuperThrive....I've long been suspect of all the screaming, 50s-era label (kinda like Dr. Bonner's magic soaps "WE ARE ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND WE SHOULD TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER AND SPACESHIP EARTH!") and felt a little gullible for buyying it. Nice to know the effects are real and not just marketing.
Julia
Julia, the superthrive and Eleanor's schtick both reminded me of Dr. Bronners too! I love Dr. Bronners, I have to admit. I don't think all products that take that "snake-oil" salesman line are bad, but all the crazy claims makes it hard sometimes to figure out exactly what they actually DO or ARE.
There was a documentary at the Red Vic recently about Dr. Bronner, it was really interesting.
You're right - Eleanor's uses the same ranting labels! I'll have to check out the Dr. Bronner documentary when it comes out on Netflix. (I admit I've used Dr. Bronners magic soaps when camping bc the ingredients supposedly don't harm the environment as much as the mainstream stuff does).
Julia
I use them at home, too. They really are nice, mild soaps. The new lavender one smells fantastic- good for baths.
Oooh...I'll have to check it out,.
I wanted to say that I also really liked Carol's article about starting new plants from the stems of existing mother plants. I tried burying the long bare stem of my H. ischnopus about a week ago and here is the result (lower right-hand corner of photo). Using bobby pins is ingenious! Great way to make new plants for the faint of heart or with expensive hoyas....worst case scenario, the vine won't root, but you won't harm the mother plant either!
Julia
Bobby pins are a great gardening tool. I usually have some of those metal/wire type U hooks (I think they were labeled for orchids) and if I run out of those, I use bobby pins to hold down vines/stems to root.
I just got home from Vegas to find the next volume of Stemma on my computer. I've printed it out, and plan to curl up in a chair, recuperate from my trip, and read! From just scanning through it quickly, it looks really good!
Karen
It is good. I got Issue 3 from Bmedel .... Thank you Brenda! Now I just need to find someone who is willing to share Issues 1 & 2 and I will be set!
imadigger sent me issues 1 and 2 Lin so I'll forward them on to you now....
~Brenda
Thank you Brenda and Imadigger! Received the email attachment today - now I'm all set with the entire series so far!
Great reading!
Thanks again,
Lin
Mark - this was my favorite issue thus far. I love all the contributions that note failures as well as successes with propagation. The article on SuperThrive was great. Thanks!
Karen
Thanks, Karen!
This issue seemed to be a lot of people's favorite. Maybe I'll do one issue a year devoted to some cultivation issue. What next, growing media? fertilizers? Well, I'll have a year to figure it out!
No Charge Susan..... and if you can d-mail me with your e-mail address I'll be happy to send you all four copies which I have now collected up thanks to imadigger!!
~Brenda
How funny.
I just emailed imadigger for the copies, too, before i even read your post, Brenda.
That is very nice of all of you who are sharing
I really enjoyed my issue too...and think that all of the information was terrific...well written and well compiled. It certainly covered lots of areas....
Thanks Mark...I know it is a labor of love....
