Dat-mansia, Is this possible?

Lindenwold, NJ(Zone 7a)

While I was browsing the ebay listings, I stumbled across this listing for Datura x Brugmansia seeds. I am new to brugs and datura. But it was my understanding that they are related like zucchini and pumpkins, but do not natural hybridize with each other. Is this another ebay hoax? Can someone explain to me if this is possible? and If so how?

It has been done before with poor results.

I would be wary of this, they look like Brug seeds to me

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I saw a thread on GW with the history of these. I thought it was pretty interesting. I've always known KHT to be on the up and up and don't think she's being deceptive in her listing.

Others must too, because the bidding is up to 14.50 with 5 more days to go. It'll be fun to see the winning bid.

I too, have known & traded with her many yrs. ago. She always was pretty "out spoken", but a very honest person. They look like both datura seed & brug seed.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

The pollen donor wouldn't change the way the seeds look, so they should look like seeds from whatever she says the pod parent is.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Why would anyone want them? LOL

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Good question............

Lindenwold, NJ(Zone 7a)

There is at least some interest, based on the auction stats, 8 bids and 165 hits. I guess my curiosity leans to if this combination indeed can
be hybridize and what type of plant it produces.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

I'm curious about the seeds. I'm willing to give them a shot and see what I get.

I don't even really like Daturas too much... I'm just a freak, I guess. :-(

I have to agree with Hibiscus, Karma is very out spoken; but she is also a VERY HONEST person. So if she says these seeds are a Datura X Brugmansia cross then I have no reason to doubt her.

ZZsBabiez, you asked "Why would anyone want them? LOL".

Even though when this was accomplished before and the results were not that spectacular, it does however, open up the door for many possibilites in the brugmansia hybridizing world. It is theoretical that the genes for the color purple could be passed along to subsequent crosses made with brugmansia.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Oh YES!!! A double purple brug! WOWZERS!!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm a newbie, but I did experiment with Datura (double golden) cross pollinate with white, single San. brug. It didn't take. My others hand pollinated took, yet others by open pollination. But the one that I got pollen from the Datura failed.

p.s. That was one trial, since Sept. I didn't have another Dat.'s bloom to repeat the experiment.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Is that idiot space_shopper still holding the winning bid? What a loser!

That'd be ME! LOLOL!!!!! :-) Just wanna experiment....

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Well I will NOT hold my breath but this past week I have put a lot of DOUBLE PURPLE pollen from Datura on Golden lady blooms, it did not bloom until it was in the house so who knows, hahaha

Marysville, WA(Zone 8a)

Kereoke if you get another Datura bloom to open you'll have a much better chance with it as the pod parent instead of a brug x dat cross.
Karma is an experience breeder. She cuts open the blooms to pollenate early and protects the bloom from cross pollenation. I think it's the real deal.

I also have no reason to doubt her. She has always been straight forward and honest. She is serious about growing her datura and has a lovely garden.
Karma has contacted me via email to ask me to post a few links in reference to this post.

Pretty cool anyways. I cant wait to hear what these seeds do and what the next step will be.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

I can't imagine why these would even be for sale. I would plant every darn one of them myself to see what would come of them. It seems that there would be much more $$ to be make if there was a plant to show a pic of that Double purple Variegated Dat-mansia. I don't doubt they are real but I sure wouldn't sell them.
