I've been an occasional visitor to DG and finally decided to bite the bullet and subscribe. My wife and I have a 3/4-acre private garden with both flowers and vegetables (Cottage-in-the-Meadow Gardens) that's listed with the Smithsonian Institution as a national heritage garden and is on the National Register of Historic Places. We garden organically and no-till. While we do save some flower seeds, our main seed-saving efforts focus on our seed bank, which contains vegetable varieties brought to eastern Iowa from Germany in the 1850s by the settlers of the Amana Colonies. Our seed bank includes the following vegetable varieties: Vielfarbiger Rettig (radish), Eiersalaat (lettuce), Schwartzwurtzel (black salsify), Knollecellerie (celeriac), Gruene Bohnen (green string bean), and Ebenezer Zwiebel (onion). Our seeds become available to local gardeners in late April. Any remaining seeds are available to anyone who wants them.
We also have lots of perennials and will occasionally have some items available for trade, which I will post in the appropriate forum. Below is a photo of a section of our vegetable garden. I'll also post a photo of the entrance to our flower gardens.

belated welcome from upstate new york
welcome, you have a beautiful place.
Welcome, Larry! Come visit the Northeast Forum sometime - we have lots of (sometimes too much) fun there! I love the name of your spread.
Thanks for the kind welcome, Herbie, Hope, and Primrose Sue. I've begun posting to my blog. If you or anyone else reading this note is interested in more information about our gardens, check out my Cottage-in-the-Meadow Gardens tab at http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/LarryR/7537/. I'll be adding a photos tab shortly to display pictures of our gardens, including individual plants and blossoms.
Welcome, Larry, and thanks for the story of the Amana Colonies and your homestead. The Amana Colonies have such a distinguished history and I had forgotten all of the details...and your historic garden is so very pretty, too! Thank you for sharing your blog and joining DG! t.
Thanks, Tabasco. This is such a wonderful, friendly gardening site. In the short time I've been a subscriber, Dave has hired me on a probationary basis as a garden writer. My first article is tentatively scheduled to appear on December 14. Things are moving so fast here, I've hardly had time to catch my breath! :-) Larry
P.S. If you're ever in our neck of the woods, we'd love to have you stop by our gardens.
