quick update

Norfolk, VA

just wanted to say that my av's are doing pretty good, although it looks like i may lose one of the smaller ones. the leaves are rolling towards the middle of the plant. i have them on a plant stand in front of the window. they get late afternoon sun. since it is fall now, the sun that comes through the window is warming but not hot. the room that my plants are in stays about 70 degrees. if there is any thing that i am doing wrong right now please don't hesitate to let me know. i will take any advice you want to give. i was thinking about putting plastic sheeting around the back of the plant stand to make it a little warmer as the weather gets colder. this particular room may get too cold for some plants. what kind of temps. should av's be kept at? also, have read that some people water these from the top and some water from the bottom. which is better? ok, enough questions for now.....thanks for the help:):):)

Hi Beckie. Can you possibly post a picture of your setup? I would love to see a pic.As far as watering some folks water from the top but I don't because my hands are much too shakey..lol..and you don't want to get water on the leaves or they will get brown spots on them. Also I heard that if you water from the top its easy to rot the crown of the plants?.. I have always bottom watered or used self watering pots. The self watering pots work really well for me but some other people don't like them. Some people use wicks to water their plants with great success but I have never personally used that method much but want to try it more.Hopefully some of the other gals will pop in here to tell you what works best for them. There are sooo many wonderful helpful people on this forum they will have you growing like a pro in no time.It is definitely not a one size fits all when it comes to av growing..lol..what works great for one doesn't work for someone else.I find av's are usually pretty forgiving tho.Do you have a sheer panel on your window so that no direct sunlight actually hits the plants? They like bright filtered sunlight but no direct sunlight beating on them...I find direct sunlight will burn the leaves.70 degrees is a good temp I think..I live in a drafty old house..lol..so in the winter I always hang a sheet of plastic on the back of my stands by the windows to protect them from cold drafts and mine really love that.Do you have any containers available to use that have clear lids on them? If you do I would take the smaller av's that aren't looking real spiffy and sit them in a container with a clear lid for awhile.Just sit them in there..just so the leaves aren't touching any other ones and the lid doesn't touch the av tops.It sort of acts like an incubator for small plants.I have saved many that way. They really love the added warmth and humidity it provides.I hope you can make sense of what I wrote.I am in a hurry so I don't have time to go back and read it before I post it..lol..When I get back from running errands I will post a pic of a few of my incubator containers so you know what I am talking about..lol
I'll be back later : )

Nancy, i will see if my daughter will come over and post a picture for me as i do not know how to do that. as far as watering, i set the pots in a bowl of water after i planted them until the soil was moist. haven't had to water since then. the window that they are in front of does not have a shear curtain but it does have a blind on it that i open in the morning. the light coming through is filtered most of the day and is only bright in the afternoon. i will look to see if i have any clear lids to put over the smaller ones....really would hate to lose any of these plants.......i will do my best at nurturing them and pray that they all survive.....thanks again, hope to hear from you soon...Beckie

Sounds like you are doing pretty good to me Beckie.. As far as the lighting and watering that sounds right on : ) Here is a pic of one of the incubators I use for smaller plants..this really seems to help them get off to a stong start..keeps them warm and comfy while they are becoming adjusted to their new home : )

I would have never thought of that! I think I may have a plastic container out in the shed, will look and if so I am covering my babies today....I may also go and get some little 3oz dixie cups and move the smaller plants to them...I'll let you know how it turns out...sorry I don't have a way to put pictures up yet, am hoping Santa brings me a digital camera so I can have my daughter show me how to use it. She is expecting her first baby, so the camera is going to be a must have!!!!
