Here is the mean white silkie cockerel I have been talking about. I've wondered about these growths sticking up. Is it normal? Calling him the little devil is one of the nicest things I've called him lately. He's really turned into a little beast. He's more tolerant of some of us than others. The only person he actually likes is my 12 year old but she truly has a way with animals. He's become quite aggressive. At the advice of another, we've carried him around on his back the last couple of days to see if it would calm him down.
I'm not much in the mood to post these after my tragedy I just posted about (death of my Araucana) but the pictures are here and so am I so...
He really is evil! Look at the horns.
Yes, I've got horny devils too.
I mean that in every sense of the word.
LOL Yeah, um, that is why I had to give him his own women in his own pen. LOL
Hello!
Badseed, we had a little buff silkie rooster that hated me. It was when Neal and I lived on same farm, but different houses. We all shared the barn and chickens. He only attacked me. He was older and had big spurs. He would get me good and left me bloody many times. He is one of the few chickens i really did not like. My new little banty rooster also dislikes me. I am just glad he is so small.
George
Thank you Badseed. Never had I seen a horned rooster!!!
Just don't ask my husband about the rooster that spurred me when dh and I had a disagreement and I went out to feed the chickens. That wasn't the first time he had spurred someone but it was the first he'd done me and the last he did anyone ;) I've been "got good" before too as a teenager. I won't have a mean rooster here anymore, he'll go in the pot.
I've tried not to give up on him yet. I'm trying to work with him to calm him down a bit. I told him the other day in a very nice voice that I'd eat him if he didn't knock it off. LOL So now we've taken to carrying him around talking to him. Yesterday I had a hold of his feet and laid him back in my arms and carried him around talking. Once he actually tried to peck me but I had on a heavy sweatshirt and no damage was done. He's such a little, hmmm, turkey does not work here does it?? Thankfully he has very small spurs. The buff silkie male has quite large spurs but he's still very friendly and calm.
Did you try exorcising him? He's too cute for the pot! LOL!!
Badseed, There is a breed of chickens from France with forked or horned combs. They are commonly referred to as Devil Chicken. The breed is reasonably common and available in the US. I think they are even sold by McMurray to be honest. I used to be quite up on all of the different breeds but after 5 yrs of intensive chicken talk ... I'm getting burned out.
Its a lafleche thats called devil chicken
the comb is an exagerated version of the polish comb
and its really not a bird you see very often
It looks nothing like that silky comb
here's a link

crestedchick, Thank you so much! Yes thats the name. And yes the breed is not seen much any longer and no one has implied the 2 combs from the 2 very different breeds look alike. I for one appreciate everyone's input especially when I can't quite recall the specifics. I considered buying some a few years back. They are said to be a decent egg laying breed .... I think they are a dual purpose breed. The horned combs sure would give folks something to chat about. Ideal or McMurray have had them in one of their catalogs if I recall correctly.
bad,
i am so very sorry to hear of your loss. it is never easy and everytime gets harder for me. i have lost a few the last few days of my buffs to the cold. we woke up to silkiecicles it was aweful!! i cried!! i have 1 buff left of my buff flock. i know how ya feel it is so unfair!!!
silkies are not supost to have horns they are to have combs that look like my one roo below but it is not uncommon for them to pop up with it. infact i have a friend who has 2 of his that have them but one his is red-red it's real evil looking, lol. they are both just like ur little guy real spitfires too.
Those horned birds are really something! I noticed that site says they are ornamental only. I wondered what that meant as far as eggs or meat. I think most of the breeds are ornamental. Even the white leghorns are neat to look at with that red against the pure white!
Thank you for the empathy. I still feel bad about Bernardo. ;(
Do those horns pass on to offspring? Think we could show them as horned silkies? LOL They white one with the horns has the big raspberry comb. The buff silkie has the darker walnut comb and no horns. I wonder if the horn gene makes them mean. LOL
Badseed, The reference "ornamental" probably refers to the comb. What the heck other use could there be? Some of the Asian cultures pickle the chicken combs (eg. kim-chee) and serve them as hours d' overs... same with chicken feet or just their toes. Sounds kinda awful but some cultures really like the odd foods. I know in Japan some will clean out the chicken guts and fry them on a griddle with miso paste. Yuk.
Ewwww. When I was younger I worked next to a Thai-American food store. They made some awesome stuff! They did sell frozen chicken feet but I never asked what you did with them. LOL I also never asked what was in my soup. ;)
"ornamental" means they are basically show birds because they are not bred for eggs, or meat or duel purpose. they are sit there and look purdy birds, rotfl.
only his horned silkies are that way. all the rest of his and mine none are like that it has to be a horn thing i agree.
I have some Lafleche
They are really nice birds
But the comb is scary looking
Yeah, The General, my silkie rooster, has three horns actually. He's like a triceratops, lol.
