Uncooperative butterfly.

Santa Fe, TX(Zone 9b)

This fellow hung around for several minutes, always hiding or keeping a branch in the way. This was the best photo I could get.

Can someone see it well enough to make an ID?
It kept looking like rough tree bark for the most part.

reddish stripe w/ darker areas would tend to fit a Red Admiral

Thanks. I wish I could have taken a better photo.

Yeppers, a Red Admiral. Put out a tray of mashed bananas or cut up oranges or mix up some butterfly bait. They are fruit feasters.

Butterfly bait:

10 lbs mashed bananas (overripe works best)
1 lb brown sugar
1 bottle dark beer (guiness stout)

Blend together in a mixer and keep in a plastic jug (make sure to vent it periodically). Pour a little in a shallow dish or brush it on tree bark or use a bait log. Don't pour it too deep or make it too thick as some butterflies may get stuck in it.

My oranges are almost ripe. I will give it a try tomorrow. Thanks!

trois.......be sure to let it vent ! Duh...I forgot and I'm still finding butterfly bait here and there once in awhile. Really, keep it outside.
