10 rhizomes Cleopatra Canna dug ready to go. Looking for medium height pastel perennials, daylily, any trades considered.

Does yours have the burgandy variegation in the leaf? They have a tendancy to revert to all green as mine have.

now that you mention it, no they don't have a variegation. You cleared up a mystery for me. It is planted with some other canna that do have red in in them, but, I thought this one use to have red in it as well. I had to look twice to make sure it was Cleopatra that I was digging. Do you know why this happens? Is this a natural tendency? Thanks

Variegation is a mutation in the plant. Which means that they can always revert back to the natural color. The way to keep them variegated is to cut out all the cannas that are not variegated.

I looked around the web at different nursery sites and saw some with variegated leaves some said with occasional purple streak. Mine would be the occasional purple streak, but, blooms have stayed very pretty and always are differebt mixes of red and yellow. What about the blooms on yours?

you have to cut back the green ones in order for it to stay variegated

That's completely normal with that kind of variegation, which is known of as "chimeric". The red colored areas and the green colored areas have somewhat different genes; hence, the plant is a chimera. With chimeras, you have the possibility of having an all red plant, one with varying mixtures of red and green, and one that is all green. This can happen all in the same clump, depending upon which cells initiate the new shoots (green, red, or a mix).

Found this on the Canna Thread.

Any one interested in these? speak now!

If anyone is interested in a canna that maintains a deep maroon leaf color the whole season, Canna Australia is for you. I have a small number of rhizomes available for trade. Here is what this variety looks like:

kathy ann, The clump in the photo is three years old. It's not the most vigorous canna I've grown and didn't bloom the first year either, but the wait is worth it!

larlienda, I'd be happy to send you a start. Perhaps at some later time you might have something to trade from your garden, but please don't feel obligated. The joy in sharing my plants with other gardeners is my reward. :)
