Just received this e-mail from Renee's Seeds telling about her newest selections. I like Renee's. She might be a little expensive, but here seed strains are very nice...
New seed introductions from Renee's Shepherd Seed
Can't believe I missed this thread!
Just discovered her seeds - they used to stock them at a favorite nursery in Phx - had no idea that they'd be on line, too. Yay!
Thanks, 'basco!
Yes, I love Renee's seeds too.
A couple of months ago we were having a long and detailed discussion about Zinnias on the Annuals forum so I called Renee's seeds to ask some questions and they spent a long time talking to me about how they choose the seeds and what sources they use for their collection. It was all very helpful and interesting and they were very patient with me.
I am quite sure that their product is is one of very high quality. I have ordered from them in the past and purchased off the rack, but I am far from a veteran grower from seed and if I can't succeed with the Renee's seeds, then nothing will work for me I am sure!
Thanks Tabasco...I ordered 22 packages of seeds last night! I've never grown from seed so we'll see how it goes. Since I'm going through garden-withdrawal I am going to try and do some wintersowing some of the seeds and in the spring I will also do some direct sowing. I also ordered 15 packages of seeds from Value Seeds....I know I'm sick!! LOL!
Sick of what, honey? I fail to see a problem....
Pagancat..LOL! You must be one of the many enablers I've met on DG! I had such an exciting Friday evening...separated the seeds from the chaf on the many flower heads I've been collecting. What a fun time!!
LOL, well, dellrose, didn't mean to be that much of a saleslady for Renee's! Sounds like you will have plenty to keep you occupied/obsessed/enthralled through the winter!
And thanks for reminding me about Value Seeds! I ordered a bunch from them a couple of years ago and had so much fun learning to grow from seed (not always successfully--I'm not patient and attentive enough to grow under lights. Better at Wintersowing.) Value seeds come without any info, but it's easy to cross reference/google with the T & M site for growing instructions.
BTW There is a seed swap going on in the Butterfly gardening forum and there's still time to get into it with all your nectar flower seed collected from your garden, too....they are doing it to encourage gardeners to get interested in the butterflies, too.
Makes for a really lively garden to have lots of butterflies visiting , I think, and adds a new dimension to the 'gardening experience' --another aspect of gardening to occupy the down times and round out learning how to grow plants and learning about seed starting and germination... at least for me--! (-:
Now I'm going over to the Value Seeds site and see what they're offering now. Their stock changes from week to week depending on how sales at T & M are going....hard to keep up!
Another seed catalog I like is Stokes Seed. They offer lots of flowers in single color varieties (instead of mixes). http://www.stokeseeds.com/cgi-bin/StokesSeeds.storefront
The seed catalogs are starting to come in--so winter must be just around the corner!
Take care. t.
I love Renee's seeds, especially her heirloom seeds. She used to be Shepherd's Seeds from White Flower Farm years ago.
I didn't even know that Stokes sold retail as we always used it in a greenhouse business wholesale and they do have great seed selection.
Me? Enable? Noooo - I just want you feel good about yourself! (cough)
BTW, Thompson-Morgan is also a fave.... ahem!
Oh my! I love Thompson-Morgan for their wide selection of stuff you
can't find anywhere else. But if you REALLY want inexpensive and cool
seeds, join some plant societies!
I am a member of NARGS and participate in their annual seed exchange.
They typically have 4000+ varieties of all sorts of plants you absolutely
wouldn't find from the big commercial sources. I donate seeds to HPS/MAG
(Hardy Plant Society/ Mid Atlantic Group) and get first pick of 35 types.
Tony Advent of PDN & Charles Cresson are donors.
I am just an absolute seed-a-holic. Each year I get 25 NARGS seed varieties
(and often go to the second round for another 20) and then 35 from HPS
plus the dozen or more I get from various commercial sources. I now donate
to the society plant sales 'cause I just don't have places to plant everything.
(Which is another nice thing about plant societies - cheap plants too!)
Happy Birthday Pagancat!
Hi, Tammy-- good to see you posting here--I haven't been over to the rock garden forum for a long time and miss seeing what you're up to!
Yes, the plant societies are a great resource for free and unusual plants and seeds. I love to go to our regional daylily society, the lily society, the iris society, the daffodil society, and and our county hort society plant/seed trades. They are definitely worth the $25 membership fees expecially if you're building a new garden...
I wish we had a Hardy Plant Society around here, but it doesn't look like there is a chapter anywhere close... And I think NARGS is about the most sophisticated group around...really some rare plant material talked about on their wonderful website, for sure!
T & M is a nice site but it didn't get very good reviews on the Watchdog for some reason. Of course, I like ValueSeeds, the T&M 99 cent outlet, better. I like Chiltern's for English style seeds, too. Also Stokes, a Canadian Co. that distributes in the US, for their big, big range of separate colored annuals...
Oh, there are so many great seed sites. I get a little loopy thinking about all of them!
Of course, DG members are a great source for seeds. And, as I mentioned on another thread, I'm bidding on some Salvia seeds on E-bay. I don't know why...I probably can't grow them here,...but you could say, maybe, that I'm addicted/obsessed, too....
Did I already mention that Hardy Plants/Specialty Perennials is having a 20% off sale on all Seeds until January 1? And Park's Seeds is having a 35% off (all) Seed sale this week? If I did, please forgive me! I just can't get it off my mind!
I learn so much about plants from the information seed companies provide on their sites. For instance, I need an annual that will bloom with my spring bulbs. Wala! Renee's Seed information on her Forget-me-nots was just the plant I needed. Eventhough It's an annual, it can tolerate frost, you can sow it in the ground in late summer and it will bloom with spring bulbs. I didn't know that before reading her seed packet information.
I love forget-me-nots! A colleague at work gave me a pot of them years
ago. They died back very soon after I planted them & but the next spring,
I found a lovely stand of them where I'd planted them. They self seed!
Uh oh, Tammy - I'm going to watch myself around you! Big trouble, I can see it a mile away.
Thanks for the Birfday wish!
I need to get through what is in the Seed Swap that Illoquin sponsored before I do *any* ordering of any sort.
