I am finally accepting the fact that winter is here and for the next 6 months, I won't see much greenery outside. Hence, I would like to add plants to my office. Although I have a window I never get any sun and have to have lights even during the day. Any suggestions of easy low light indoor plants that could grow away from a window (there's no window sill)?
easy low light plants
Peace Lily: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57837/
Chinese Evergreen: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/70490/
Potho's (Devils Ivy): http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/51451/
Parlor Palm: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1479/
There are many many more that will do well in low light situations, but these are just a few.
Thank you. I think, one plant I have is Devil's Ivy. It does not look all that lush as the ones in the pictures. Mine is a bit leggy.
If it is leggy, you can cut it back and root the cuttings for more plants!
Also the ZZ plant.
I've never even seen ZZ plant before. Interesting. So it seems that most of the low light ones are dark green.
Not necessarily. The Fittonia/Mosaic Plant is not dark green:

And, some of the Syngonium's (Arrowhead Vine) have color:

I love white veins! Thank you for the suggestions.
Ellesgh: That is a lovely African Violet you've got there!
How about a prayer plant? They do need quite a bit of humidity though. Don't know if you can manage that in your office, but you could mist it once or twice a day, and put it on a pebble tray.
Humidity is a bit of a problem in my office but the purple passion looks like a lovely plant I can grow. Thank you for the suggestion.
ellesgh I just bought a purple passion plant at HD because it reminds me of my grandmother who always had a big one growing at her house. Can you tell me how I would propagate it so that I can get starts to share with others??
In keeping with this thread I have a dwarf umbrella tree that I bought at Wal Mart that has done very well in low light....
Thanks ~Brenda
I love thePurple Passion but can't keep that one alive for long! The info in PF says you can propagate by leaf cuttings.

Hi bmedel, purple passion roots very easily, just cut a peace and stick into some dirt. I've rooted several this summer this way. It will do better (and more likely to root) with more light. It can even take full sun outdoors in summer.
you can also stick in water it will grow root in water
So it sounds like the way you do African violet leaves, put the leaves in either some light soil or water and they sprout up new leafs! Thanks!!

yes very much the same
the main plant will alway give you a new start
Beautiful plants ellesgh, such a variety! I enjoy walls of plants! :0) very peaceful and calming to look at and fun to grow and share!
