Competition over food?

What's the thinking of the resident experts on this where dogs are concerned?

I'm not talking about violence, but I am talking about strange antics (grab the goodie and head for the hills), and in the case of the senior mutt, some intimidation of the pup via barking and such to keep food for himself. The inconvenience is worrying about the pup getting a decent meal.

Is seperate feeding just the way it goes, or is this something to worry about on a larger scale? I've read a couple of sources that say it's no big deal.

There is plenty of food to go around, so that's not the source of the problem.
