I thought this was an impatiens seedling when it first came up, but obviously that's not it. Still, it's kinda pretty, and it looks so familiar, but I just can't place it. Anyone know?

Pattie, it looks to me like you have a tallow tree growing in your flower bed. If you have anyone with pastures nearby, kill it!
It makes a great shade tree quickly, but drives people crazy keeping it from overtaking their pastures.

Oh, that's the one that's causing so much trouble down on the Gulf coast, isn't it? Terrible problem in Texas.

I wonder where it came from? We don't have any pastures nearby, but I'm pulling it up anyway.

Where did it come from? Probably birds! If one neighbor has a mature tree, I've noticed that everyone in the neighborhood will eventually have seedlings pop up. I've had to pull a few up myself.

is that pink thing vinca?

You must be right. My bird feeders are just a few feet away.

I pulled it up. That thing had a monster taproot!

Mamajack, those are salmon impatiens.

Yeah, I don't plant a lot of annuals either. Okay, well, I don't plant as many as I used to (LOL). That area was under construction and not ready to plant permanently. But you know how it is--all that bare dirt was just screaming, "Plant something!"
