Hi from southeastern PA

West Norriton, PA(Zone 6b)

Just joined Dave's this weekend. I'm addicted already, was on the site most of the day today -- really should have been working. I am a novice gardner, and already obsessed. Today was our first frost, which I thought meant my outdoor gardening days were numbered. Not true, while scoping out DG's I found lots of very helpful forums, one being winter sowing -- now I have an new additction. I guess I'll spend most of the day tomorrow reading all about it.

Great site!!!

Hi Michael,

I am fairly new also and live 1/2 hour south of the Delaware Water gap (moved from NJ about 2 yrs ago). This winter will be my first try at winter sowing also. (Because of what I read on DG). So far, I have been slicing all kinds of plastic containers in half and slicing holes in them. In the next couple of weeks, I will start putting potting soil topped with seed starter in them and then setting them outside.

Which seeds will you choose to start with. I have not made up my mind yet, but need to do it very soon.

Regards,

Teri

I have only collected the plastic containers so far. Plan to prepare them this weekend. I haven't decided on the seeds yet. What are you using for the seed starter?

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I will go to the garden store and pick up whatever brand of bagged starter they recommend to me. I guess i will also use the messenger puffer that is recommended.

I will try with the seeds that were already given to me:
delphinium mix
foxglove mix
lobelia (cardinal flower)
russian sage
hakone double white balloon flower
verbena moss
english dasies (bellis perennis
candy tuft
marguerite golden
butterfly weed

and some others. Some of them are probably too tender to do this with, but I will find out.

We moved one year ago into a new place that had absolutely no landscaping. Part of the project was for me to start seeds in the house because the expense was getting out of control. I did this with so many different seeds that I could not leave the house for any length of time all winter (our children wanted us to visit and stay over more often).

It took me forever to water and move plants every day. I was able to fill in much of the empty garden areas this way, but I would like to have the winter sowing work for me to cut down on the time and mess that I had inside.

We even had vines growing up the windows indoors and tomato plants as tall as I am because I started too early to insure what would grow.

I am sure that I will have so many different kinds of seeds to harvest this coming year. I have never done this before, but if I get it right, I would be happy to share some with you since we are in the same zone in Pennsylvania.

We can communicate thru D Mail here on Dave's Garden, if you wish, with the progress of our winter sowing.

Regards,

Teri

Shown in the picture is one of the beds with most of them started from indoor seeds or cuttings.

This is a great website to make winter sowing seem more comfortable.
