Can anyone tell me how to overwinter Bougainvillea? It is supposed to freeze tonight , so I dug them up and put them in a big pot. I have a deep dirt basement. Should I cut them back? The vines are about 4 ft. long..
overwintering Bougainvillea
I don't live in zone 6b so I don't think I can help. We leave ours out all winter and they come back from the roots but I live in zone 9.
Bougainvilleas only bloom on new growth anyway, so i would chop back nice and hard and not have to worry about stickers all winter.
Yea I agree. I didn't know that they only bloomed on new wood when I asked. Those thorns are nasty. Thing is sitting in my living room tonight. Haircut tomorrow. Thanks.
I actually put mine inside in front of a south window every year. Rewards me with blooms of and on all winter! Sometimes with no leaves just the blooms! And last year was the first time I ever hard pruned mine and it didn't bloom at all. Of course I pruned early early spring. Was told that was the wrong time!
I agree with Diane. Before we got the GH, we put the Boug inside, south exposure, and it would drop every leaf, then bloom it's head off.
Oops, too late to try the in the house thing this year. I gave Bougie a haircut already. Just as well I guess. My husband would probably divorce me If I brought in one more plant, especially one as big and thorny as Bougie. I do have a big southfacing window, so I might try it next year. Thanks to all for the advice.
I brought mine into the greenhouse this past weekend, gave them both a good trim and put the extra cuttings in a pot to try and root. I figure you never know.
Quick question though....I kept them both in pots and buried the pot this summer. Now they are both ready to burst out of the pots. Should I pot them up now or in the spring?
