White flowered shrub in bloom along the roadside

Charlotte, NC(Zone 8a)

I have noticed a full-flowered white shrub along the highway blooming along the interstate and other roads now. What I wanted to know is ... what is its common name, the botanical name & cultivar name if there is one. Is it cultivated in the trade? I definitely would not like to grow it if it is invasive. (It looks nice from the road.) LOL Please advise.

It's probably Baccharis halimifolia - the "flowers" you're seeing are actually the seeds.

I know exactly what your talking about and I'm thinking it's just a weed. Go dig one up if you want to try it out.

Sigh. I can't find it, is there a common name? To me any plant I like (invasives aside) qualifies as a "flower". not a weed *G*.

I found it by using Google. Most often if you put in the name and add "bloom" the DG listing will be in the top 4-5.

Thanks Judy, I'll figure this out soon enough :). I put it in wrong :(.

Tom nailed it when he gave the botanical name and I looked it up in the Plant Files. There are a whole lot of photos of it there. It's a nice color change after seeing the goldenrod. Thanks for the link Judy and for everyone's interest.

Some times I have better luck just googling a plant and that will give me a link to Daves'. Don't know why Google seems to work better than Dave's own search engine.

I agree with Tom that it's probably Baccharis halimifolia. I always assumed that's what it was, but now I'm going to have to stop and go actually LOOK at the plant, up close and personal to be sure! It's as you said, all over the place down here in Charleston!
