welcome to the forum!!!!

oh thank you! i have looked on this site and seems i will have lots of different types of african violets to try--and am so happy to see that i might even be able to make a new plant from an older one--i like to give a few friends a small christmas gift that i make (like my handmade soaps) and this year i might try and start some house plants in pretty containers---what is your favorite african violet? the store had some that were pretty and were in a little glass enclosure rather than dirt--pretty but i didn't ask if that was temporary and then you still need to get it into dirt--what do you think?

I would think they'd need some kind of soil, or sphagnum...something....
My favourite AV? OMG...there are so many, you will be addicted in no time if you hang around here long enough. Not to mention the Episcia, and Kohleria---so many Gesneriads, so little space---lol----

Plano, TX

ok--so are episcia and kohleria and gesneriads all types of african violets?--yes i have that type of personality that gets addicted to my interests!! than goodness i find pretty innocent interests!!!

North Augusta, ON

They are members of the same family---gesneriads-----episcia, kohleria and AV's are all in the Gesneriad family---plus many, many more----sinningia, chirita, streptocarpus. Just look around at the pictures on this forum, or google Gesneriads---WOW----very addicting.

Welcome aboard the fun AV forum, planolinda!

We have so much fun on this forum although we all grow something besides the gesneriads.

You might want to jump in big time and join us for the bingo game. Critterologist is the host this next game. I think it was decided to combine both November and December into one great game. Members donate all sorts of prizes and this will really be a big prize catching game with the holidays coming up.

Read the thread and you will quickly figure out how to play............Critter is not quite ready for us to turn our bingo cards in yet.

PS>>>>>> I grew my first african violet last January and now have gro-light stands all over the house.
The picture posted were for the homebound ladies of the church several months ago.........we do have a good time!

Welcome to the AV Forum, Planolinda! You will love it here, so many generous and friendly people! Since joining DG a year ago I find this forum is where I spend most of my time .... everyone is like Family! You will get hooked on these Gesneriad's real quick. I like most, started with one or two African Violets ... now I have a few of the other Gessie plants too! As well as hundreds of house plants!

Check out the Bingo thread and consider playing Bingo with us for November/December! It is always lots of fun and there are always wonderful prizes! Here's a link to where we are all discussing the game. It won't start until later in November! It's real easy to play and we do have a lot of fun chatting during the game!

Again, welcome! Would love to see a photo of your new African Violet! And, I'd be real interested in seeing a pic of the ones you say are in little glass enclosures! Was it a plant nursery you saw them, or some other type of store? Sounds really pretty!

ok--i kept seeing bingo in your threads and guess what i thought? i thought "bingo" must be a very popular type of african violet!!!!-----i will go now and look into what it involves to play the game--sounds like lots of fun!~

Planolinda: Here how the game is played: The host gives a list of 35 names of plants. We choose 15 from that list, write them down .... send a d-mail with your 15 choices to whoever is the card holder for that months game. The next game that will be me, I volunteered to hold cards for the next game. And, Critterologist is hosting.

The host will tell what day she is going to start making calls. She will post one or two of the plant names each day and if they are on your card you mark them off. When all 15 of yours have been called, you post the word "Bingo" and the first ones to post they have Bingo are the winners. We always have really great prizes and a lot of fun chatting whether we win or not! It is really fun when it gets right down to the end and a lot of people still need the same one to have Bingo! The prizes are donated by some of the players on the AV forum. We usually have 5 prizes and a biggest loser prize - which is a great prize too!

Hope you can join us in a game .... you will love it, and you might just win a great prize!

edited to say: The biggest loser prize is usually whoever has the most still left on their card at the end of the game. If there are a few people, we put all those names in a hat and draw one out for that prize!
