Your third photo is a Red Admiral...a totally different butterfly than the second one (American Lady).

Glad to see that Crimson Patch. We had a mass emergence of them this season. Used to be we'd be lucky if we counted five all year long...now they are everywhere.

Red Admiral is a Vanessa cardui, same family as the Am Lady, but surely 2 different bflies.

I was about to start a thread asking for the ID on a butterfly in my garden today when I found this thread. I think my butterfly is an American Lady, too. Am I correct?

Hi marsue~
Great shots... Yours is the Painted Lady, same family as AL, a different butterfly, and different host plants.

Here is a link for the risk of being redundant, lol

Thanks for the info, debnes. Some of these butterflies look so much alike that it is hard for a newbie like me to tell the differnce! I enjoyed reading the info at the hyperlink you posted.

Don't forget about the West Coast Lady (vanessa annabella). They are quite similar too...but alas, I have never seen one this far south.

Does anyone get those in their yards? Bet it would be a hoot to compare all three!!!

We'd be hard pressed to see annabella this far east, but it sure would be a hoot Cat, lol!
There are 4 Vanessas here in NA, Red Admiral is the fourth. (Vanessa

They have Vanessas in Australia too.. Just like yours marsue. Painted Lady, (Vanessa cardui).

There are 7 different butterflies listed in BugFiles with the genus "Vanessa".

We get 4 of them in N.America I am sure of: AL, PL, WCL, and Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta).
