My first season with Brugs. Bought 4 cuttings in January; planted 2 in the ground and 2 in pots. This one I planted under my window in February 2007. He survived the freeze but was leafless when I planted him. Just look at him now. This pic is 10 days old. I need to post the most recent. All of the buds have opened. The most amazing plant I have ever seen!!
Between Charlie, my night blooming jasmine and my tuberose, my backyard smells heavenly. I get to thoroughly enjoy the aroma every time I sit in the hot tub, watch the stars and inhale...deeply.
Those of us who visit here are so blessed. We get to enjoy and appreciate all these wonderful treasures of nature.

WOW!!! Awesome---congratulations!
Congratulations! You sure have a happy looking Charlie.
Beautiful & Wow & Oh Man, Charlie looks well feed.:)Anita
Beautiful, is Charlie the name he was sold under or is that the name you have given him. I am a newbie so sorry for silly questions. It would be so nice to have your weather!
Joyce
Might be Charles Grimaldi, Joyce. I have 2 young stubborn ones in the basement...They had been sitting ALL summer, I finally potted them up to 6 inch pots in July or August and they appear to have put on some growth, not much.... I treat them pretty much the same as all my other brugs, not as much food, cause they're babies... then people like Sarah post pics of monster growth.... (hmmm maybe something to do with having a hot tub?lol) they better start putting out next summer or you can have them both! (or maybe they'll grow so much in the basement I can bring you a cutting to the spring ru) Sarah THAT is amazing! Please do post a bloom pic.
AuntB, looks to me that you won't be able to get it out of the basement...LOL. I think you should get a hot tub and see if that works....atleast that would make you feel better.
Sarah, please post pictures of the blooms. It has got to be amazing.
Joyce
I just took some updated pics. I'll post them later today.
Thank you for all the encouragement. :)
Sarah
Absolutely beautiful !
Thank you, Joyce.
I received 9 cuttings in the mail. I have had trouble growing Charles Grimaldi, but maybe this coming spring will be my lucky year.
Thanks woodspirit1, least I know I'm not the only one with some slow growing Charlie, dmail me next fall for a cutting, if you want or need one by then. Sarah, yours commanded to be the center of attention - just grand and all those blooms! BEAUTIFUL! How about the smell? Sweet, citrusy? I have to say of all my plant obsessions, brugs are at the top of the list.
Wow your CG is amazing. It really did spread out and take over the whole flowerbed. Just call him a bed hog!
bagthepi, how tall is Charlie? Do you know if the cutting was from below the Y or above the Y?
Aunt B, if I can't get any of these 9 CG cuttings to make it , I'm going to give up on him.
Charlie is over 6 feet tall now. I bought the cuttings from Prejean nursery in Louisiana. I'll ask the owner for you. He's great about responding to questions. I'll post the answer here.
If he's gotten that tall in one season, he's probably been cut from below the Y. Sure is beautiful. I hope mine root and I can have this wonderful brug next year.
I asked Prejean Nursery about the cuttings. His response was that he does thousands of rooted cuttings every year and there isn't a preference. I think I was just blessed with this group of rooted cuttings from Prejean's. Maybe he has the magic touch.
Sarah
What were you feeding Charlie, bagthepi? He is beautiful and I want growth like that next year, too!! :))
If he's like the rest of the brug growers, he's feeding it everything, lol.
Hard to believe, but I've never fed Charlie. Probably a good thing. Can't imagine what he would have done if I'd fed him. Maybe he just likes my early morning conversations with him. He's right outside my bedroom window and I greet him every morning....:) Such a great way to wake up!
Sarah
Well now, Sarah, isn't that just the way? You don't feed him at all and he's such a perfect specimen... I fuss, feed, spray and baby for a year and he's still in a small pot.... go figure. I'm sticking one in the ground next spring and forgetting about him (haha, I'll be looking everyday)! What a pleasant way to wake up each morning!
They must really love the alkaline soil.
Well, we have clay soil, which gives most people grief, but we've found that some plants just love it. Maybe Charlie is one of those...:)
Sarah
Yep, we have red clay here. I usually add amendments to it and make sure there is adequate drainage where I plant.
I didn't even do that....;). I may have tilled that bed before he was planted...last year is a bit of a blur due to recuperation that pretty much occupied my brain. Charlie just seems to like this spot....eastern exposure and not much competition. I have Hawaiian pikake, lavender, verbena and geraniums in that bed as well. He truly is the 'Daddy'!...
Sarah
Glad you are doing better, and congrats on Charlie.
Thank you. :)
