Harris County Questions...

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I am trying to find out if the county (outside city limits) is responsible for upkeep of sidewalks or if the homeowner is? Mine are currently fine but there are many in my neighborhood that are buckled or upheaved from age and trees etc and I would like to find a solution. I would love to see them just torn out, I much prefer the expanse of yard and since they are so precarious in spots anyhow.

Search results turns up county tax info and no general "contact us" links.

You should contact your homeowner's association. I think that they have the sidewalks because they are public areas, even though they run through your yard.

Actually it is the HOA mgmt co that said they are not a county but homeowner issue. And that seems to make sense. I wouldn't have even thought they were the upkeep of the HOA...but that's okay my dues are high enough. :)

They are going to suggest at next mtg about just having them removed which I am all for...looks tacky when they are all buckled and such.

Just make sure you dont have to have them.. some places you HAVE to have the sidewalk...

how come?

ADA issue no doubt.

right... you just need to check before anyone ripps it out and does not replace...

Yeah but LOL on that because the (not sure correct name of it) but the corner pieces that have to ramp up for ADA rules they are TERRIBLE, some do not fit at an angle covering the whole corner, some are really steep it's hard to even bike up (though sidewalks are NOT for bikes), and some have broken concrete on their edges. They are really rough and none of the corner pieces throughout the whole neighborhood match in shape or size. Very strange.

I live in a 2,000 acre community that was broken up into several "sections" with different HOA's and some of the sections (some neighboring) never even had walks installed. And some sections which have bridges going over drain ditches, they do not have walks going over them in some parts and then they do in others.

So basically the neighborhood does not meet current ADA standards at all....and back when built decades ago was not even done well in that aspect.

We are not in city limits either. If that means anything.

I would love to know who "owns" them....hoping to search and find more info on it.

still read your papers and call the county and ask them just to be sure, some places too you have to have them if you ever had them before.

thank-you for the FYI!

I just had some family get into trouble for with a city for taking it out - got a big fine.

WOAH! Well it'd be a neighborhood effort, if it's done, and I'm sure the board along with their lawyer will work out any kinks. I'd venture to say that the removal cost would be so prohibitive they won't though.
